I worked at SunGard full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice perks: Can work from home from time to time, great gifts on your 5-10-15 years at work.

    Smart developers

Constantly improving the release cycle and following the best practices.

    Cons

Re-organization can happen frequently so this can be stressful.

Depending on the above, you can have a manager that doesn't share the same vision or ideas at all with the previous one so you will need to adapt.

I have been working at SunGard full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There's a good view of London from the window.
    Reasonable benefits
Some parts of the company can be good to work in

    Cons

Internal systems are a total omnishambles
Management hugely variable some good, others petty-minded
Increasing US-centric nature of the company, owners clearly desperate to offload the company hence absurd targets imposed top-down.
    Terrible work-life balance
    Canary Wharf is not London.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sort out the appalling internal systems (or lack thereof)
Listen to the businesses rather than impose from the top

I worked at SunGard full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Lots of product lines catering to just about every market. Globally recognized name (can be a pro or con).

    Cons

SunGard grows by acquisition but does not do a great job of integrating those new businesses. The senior people in each acquired unit tend to have their eye on the door or on a more senior role elsewhere at SG and you are left with a lot of C+ talent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow through on some of the integration of the acquired businesses.

I have been working at SunGard full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The work-life balance is probably the best I've had in my career. And for around a year, there's the ability to learn both the technological and business-based aspects of your role.

    Cons

Once you've been in the job a while, boredom tends to creep in. There is realistically very little chance of career progression owing to the acquisition-based nature of the company, meaning teams work in silos without much interaction across products, let alone departments and divisions. The compensation package is not fantastic, but owing to the good work-life balance, it's acceptable. Senior management can be based in another part of the globe, meaning you don't have any contact with them from one year to the next.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Career progression for employees needs to improve, otherwise good talent will always be on the look out for jobs elsewhere. Senior management needs to improve interaction with it's staff.

    Love my coworkers

I have been working at SunGard

    Pros

I have an amazing group of coworkers, which is one the reasons that I have stayed as long as I have.
My immediate managers are caring and genuinely look out for those people who work under them .

    Cons

Lack of concern for employee morale, limited ability to move up in the company, high benefit copays and stagnant salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With the lack of even basic loving raises and the increased cost of benefits, many employees are making less than they did years ago.

Good company to settle down. Not sure after the acquisition by Datatel

Former Employee - Senior Engineer in Bangalore (India)

I worked at SunGard full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The higher education sector - Laid back, Life - Work balance (i know), excellent opportunities for learning for freshers, safe for women

    Cons

The typical in any small organization. long term-ers and politicians.. as long as you are not wronging anyone, it's a good organization to be there.

The worst VFP Programming Code I have ever worked with (Public Sector)

Former Employee - Software Developer III

I worked at SunGard full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The people were great to work with. However, there was very little communication with your immediate supervisor or managers. An 8-5 job so they didn't expect long hours. That is a good thing because any more time spent in front of the some of the sloppiest program code on the planet was enough to drive you insane.

    Cons

On your first day they sit you in front of a computer expecting you to unravel spaghetti code. It was a nightmare. I dreaded going to work every day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time with your people. Have new developers team up with developers that have been there for a while (the ones that could handle the piece of crap programming code) and at least show them what they are getting into. Actually, maybe they should sit down with potential developer candidates but then they may not be able to hire any VFP developers.
