    Pros

O2 UK: See what you can do. What an amazing brand and great place to work. Fun, exciting, dynamic, innovative. You can reminisce about all these good things because it is all gone and the company is managed from an impersonal meeting room north of Madrid like a Spanish government organisation. Pay is good, the good pension is gone and they have an extreme version of hot-desking implemented in Slough that may rival Nordic traditions of flexible working. You can work from home and expect to travel to Madrid on a regular basis...

    Cons

The company is managed like a government department; extreme micromanagement and medieval promotion methods. Those in the circle of trust are promoted and congratulated in numerous employee events.

A company frantically searching for new business strategies and markets to enter

I have been working at Telefónica full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Very approachable people at almost all levels. Nice environments to work in. Not overly process driven. Opportunities to change departments and career orientation for those who take the initiative.

    Cons

Now in a very mature market, the company is searching itself and struggles for a coherent strategy. Generally delusional about its ability to crack open new markets in a short time. A major re-org every 6 months (5 CIOs in 3 years). There is a tendency for preparing big strategies and presentations but in reality there is only ever an appetite for "low hanging fruit" and "quick wins" - The company does not have the stomach for real changes. Now operates within severe budget limitations for any project. There is a culture of "urgency" and changing direction. i.e. everything is always urgent, but then tends to take longer because of lack of planning or to be canned altogether because something else has become urgent. Culture of showing dedication by sending emails long after hours and immediate answers are increasingly appreciated or even expected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being delusional about start-up projects and initiatives to enter new markets to save the company within a very short time span (although some of those initiatives are definitely worth trying). Instead recognise that there is still immense value for years to come in the core business, but only by having the courage to re-configur this part of the organisation drastically and invest in those changes - cultural changes, systematically simplify and drive cost out (which requires investment!), etc - instead of changing the CIO and the names of the teams on the org chart every 6 months.

I have been working at Telefónica full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

People are generally very nice and there is a culture of flexible working.

    Cons

Career progression is based on coffee talks rather than merit. There is no structured talent management approach and it is very hard to get to senior roles without spending lots of time network and pushing through.

Very political company, things get decided by committee and too many people like to have a voice at the table just to show their face.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management are somehow detached from reality. They have been here for a long time and have not been able to transform the company.

I have been working at Telefónica as a contractor

    Pros

    - Good company to gain some experience

    - Employees get to enjoy a certain level of autonomy

    - Work environment is usually on the relaxed side

    Cons

    - Salaries are on the low end, which is the main reason turnover is so high

    - Training is major issue since they don't really have any training programs, everything is pretty much learn as you go

    - Many individuals in upper management positions are incompetent and/or unaccountable

    - Subcontracting actually decreases employee morale and leads to decreased employee performance

    - Company does not seem to value or respect formal education as much as they should

    - They promote based on seniority instead of skills, ability or education

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Correct some of the Cons mentioned above and all parties involved will benefit at the end.

    Pros

Very good learning, well paid, many opportunities of international experience, in some countries, its strong presence helps to conduct large business

    Cons

As a big company, too many politics, that contributes to loss of opportunities, and put a lot of pressure on procurement of services

I have been working at Telefónica full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible working is a real pro to Tef, but in fairness if they didn't have it you wouldn't get a desk and certainly not a parking space at the HQ. The culture is good as are in general the people i have worked with. The overall package is pretty good, but they are not the highest payers.

    Cons

Seemingly inept senior leadership that have been in post too long do not appear to have a firm grasp on the future of the company. They appear very nepotistic in appointment of senior roles, do not embrace change or innovation and ultimately seem powerless to steer the company in a clear and focussed path. Middle management are un-empowered and generally spineless to the disarray above. Under/Mis-investment and central Tef milking of the cash cow that was O2 is now revealing cracks in the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Arguably some more change at the top is needed, in all my career I have never seen such a fixed board. Whilst constant change is bad, likewise is stagnation. New ideas and initiative is needed top down.

I have been working at Telefónica full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Cool Brand, Great Offices, Very Flexible, Benefits are good, Pension is good.

    Cons

Mismatched / Huge targets not representing assigned accounts
    Pay is average.
Commission structure includes a 15% Client Sat score, if your part of the company does not hit it, you don't get it. (almost a tax)
    Not a sales culture
If you don't speak Spanish forget any real high level progression
Held back by crazy decision from
The Whole TEF Digital brand is/was Vaporware

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some people that are from outside the company to transform things, stop putting mobile minded people in senior positions.
