I have been working at The Nielsen Company full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

A lot of opportunities to move around the organization. Exposed to different disciplines that I have been able to leverage in my career after Nielsen.

    Cons

A lot of lateral movement. Only a select few are groomed for leadership internally. External hires often lead a business the don't quite understand.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pedigrees are good, but mix in some soup-to-nuts talent and bring them up the ladder and to the table. Reinventing the wheel is costly and painful.

I worked at The Nielsen Company as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Interned at Nielsen BASES (FMCG branch) in São Paulo, Brazil. The people were really friendly and fun. I went to football matches and a bunch of parties with them. However, the office was growing at the time and people moving in and out quicker.
    Compensation was good.
Management and more senior people were very helpful.

    Cons

The office is in Cotia, requiring 45min of bus each day, or more depending on where in SP you live.

I worked at The Nielsen Company full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

If you like being independent and can manage your own time to get the work done then this is the place for you. There's lots of really cool and interesting work, plus it seemed like something bizarre/crazy was happening everyday when dealing with the insurmountably insane clients and mountains of data. Totally fun.

    Cons

Pay could be better compared to other companies and dealing with other offices can be a pain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more... you'll retain more talent.

Former Employee - Client Service Executive in Milan (Italy)

I worked at The Nielsen Company as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    very friendly and informal environment

    nice and very supportive colleagues

    A lot of learning opportunities

Nielsen gets you in contact with an extended network of professionals in the industry which is in an invaluable networking opportunity

    Cons

not so meritocratic environment as what really matters is the relationship you have with your chief and other senior staff. If they like you then you have a chance to get a promotion. All the internal procedures revolve around an overly bureaucratic system which on one side highly extend the time to get things done and on the other negatively affect people's morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to instill and cultivate a more meritocratic culture and strive to reduce red tape operative procedures.
