Trendy is good at a lot of things, making games is not one of them

I have been working at Trendy Entertainment full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The art team working here is exceptional and their work speaks volumes. To a large degree the art side of things at Trendy has little hindrance and is one of the only teams in the company who is truly allowed to push themselves and put a meaningful touch on the game.

Things have gotten a little better over the last few months but that is only because Trendy hit absolute rock bottom a few months ago.

    Cons

-When Trendy let 20% of the staff go they also decided to give themselves wonderful reviews on here 2-3 days before letting everyone go. These reviews just happened to be the highest scoring reviews the studio had ever received too.

-If I were to describe the overall environment at Trendy with one word it would be toxic. The toxicity of the company has gone down a little in the past few months but at any given moment over half the company is so afraid they will lose their jobs that their work quality suffers. One of the worst issues attributing to the toxicity is the way different teams communicate with each other, or in Trendy's case don't communicate with each other. I can't fully hold the people responsible for this though as the management, not the leads, but specifically the producers on the project will quickly shut you down if you speak out of line or hold to an opinion that differs from theirs.

-If you do not belong to the "IN" crowd than you are a vocal minority who has no say in anything at the studio. If you were to ask a majority of the studio if they thought their opinions were listened too it would be a resounding no. Many people I work with here chose to keep their mouths shut because they are ignored by management. Over two dozen employees at the studio have expressed a desire to leave asap and 5 already have in the last two weeks alone.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees and stop giving special treatment to those you deem to be good. Open your eyes and see that many of the people in charge here are running the company into the ground, you are constantly having to replace your employees because the people in charge here are incompetent and running them into the ground or kicking them out of the studio because they view them as an issue. You'd save so much trouble and money by removing the two-three people in charge here that are running the company into the ground.

There is so much potential at Trendy, so many extremely talented and dedicated people work here but Trendy will never meet its potential until a select group of the people in charge here are removed.

Next time you let a group of people go don't write yourself a pair of convenient reviews

    Pros

A very strong culture. Great IP to work on.

    Cons

Advancement within the company is difficult
Really long hours for extended time periods
Sometimes goes into shift based schedules during crunch

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is a joke here. It's basically a close group of buddies protecting their positions - the result is: well, Vicarious Visions. A company that makes other people's games poorly. My advice to management? Quit. Go find jobs in advertising.

    Pros

The pay is competitive. And if you make it in the clique, you're good.

    Cons

Long hours with no payoff. Unfulfilled promises. Promises made to make you work longer and harder, only to learn they were never real. Weak management. Many layoffs. It's sad to watch coworkers be let go under the guise of mass layoffs, for personal reasons, not because of their work, but because someone higher up felt threatened. I can't wait to get out. You are always afraid you're the next to go. If you want a career, go elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Evaluate yourselves. You need to make changes. Major changes.

The people there were good. There were fun parties after work. We were making a cool product that millions of people used.

    Cons

I have been working at Trendy Entertainment full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    -good group of Employees
    -talented developers, artists and teams
    -Interesting people

    Cons

    -Horrible/ Inexperienced management
    -Abusive and controlling boss
    -Low wages / No perks
-Crunch Time / Overtime hours are constant and mandatory despite contracts
-Experience and knowledge is not respected or allowed
-Lead and senior positions are a farce. Only person making decisions is boss, despite lack of knowledge
    -Questionable business practices
-Constant threats / inappropriate behavior from management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees with respect and allow leads, senior positions and directors to do their jobs. There are many very innovative individuals working for this company who suffer daily under poor working conditions, arbitrary deadlines and slimy management. I do not understand how the artist teams deal with the uninformed decisions made by upper management. It's bad enough in our room and yet, I know they have it even worse off than we do. I have never worked for someone who is so afraid of his own employees before that he treats them like bad kids and while I may not be one of the vocal ones in the office I am secretly ashamed of working for this company by the way it treats the people it employs.

    I worked at Trendy Entertainment

    Pros

A challenging unique environment, developing cutting edge games using Unreal technology. A group of tight-knit artists and developers working towards their dreams.

    Cons

Brutal crunch periods, long work hours. Little work-life balance emphasis. Little opportunity for internal advancement, and lack of motivating influences.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to focus on recruiting and retaining top talent. Turnover is dangerous to any business, but especially indie studios.

Trendy has a lot of good potential and talented people but is still in the baby stages of development as a studio.

I have been working at Trendy Entertainment

    Pros

-Some cool and high scoring (in reviews) projects.
-The chance to work on many different kinds of games.
    -Chance to learn new things.
    -Good workmates.
-Good opportunity to try your hand at different parts of development (if you are ambitious enough)
-Cost of living in Gainesville is low and people are fairly nice.
    -Health insurance.

    Cons

-Long work hours plus weekends in many cases.
-Current studio space is cramped and inefficient.
    -Very few company perks.
-Projects are not given enough planning time.
    -Pipeline is pretty sloppy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix the pipeline, learn from employee feedback, the studio is too small for communication to be this sloppy. More perks asap :)
