My work makes a difference!

Trainer IV (Current Employee)
Berkeley, CA (US)

I have been working at UC Berkeley full-time for more than 5 years

ProsWorking at UC Berkeley means I make a difference everyday. I contribute to something larger than myself by contributing to an instution that makes the world a better place. The benefits are outstanding, and having work-life balance is actually possible.

ConsI'm not paid as much as I would be in the private sector, and I often work using antiquated technology. Faculty is king, and the contributions of staff are more likely to be overlooked than praised and celebrated.

Advice to Senior ManagementAppreciate staff more, let them know their work matters, and offer timely, relevant, and specific information about performance. Consider workload balance - having too much work and not enough time to accomplish it is demotivating. Ask yourself...What should we stop doing? How can we streamline processes?

Satisfied from serving the student community and faculty at large

Security Official (Former Employee)
Berkeley, CA (US)

I worked at UC Berkeley part-time for more than a year

ProsGreat coworkers, flexible schedules, and minimal duties (depending on job responsibilities of course). I had extremely supportive supervisors and the experience was very rewarding.

ConsSleep schedule needs to be figured out prior to starting your shift, time management can get out of hand due to unforeseeable incidents that require immediate attention.

I love academia

Graduate Student Researcher (Current Employee)
Berkeley, CA (US)

I have been working at UC Berkeley full-time for more than a year

Proscreative, free environment where one can explore ideas they have for their research. Beautiful campus and lots of great places to work and study all over.

Consnot much money to live in the expensive bay area; a lot of your perks or time-off policies seem to depend on who your advisor is. My advisor is fair- but also has high expectations (perfect balance, I think).

Advice to Senior ManagementLobby to get students' higher wages to make living here a little less stressful.

I have been working at UC Berkeley full-time for more than 3 years

Pros-Wonderful people
-Great benefits
-Great place to live
-Strong sense of "company" culture and mission

Cons-Pay is somewhat lower in my field (Physics) than comparable schools
-Big bureaucracy at times

Advice to Senior Managementpay and appreciate graduate students more. They are the backbone of the campus.

Academic Center Assistant

Academic Service Assistant (Current Employee)
Berkeley, CA (US)

I have been working at UC Berkeley part-time for less than a year

ProsRelaxed job with task that are very easily accomplishable. You will be able to do homework on the job if nothing else is going on.

ConsAs college students we are being gouged for money by the university in terms of tuition. The least they could do is pay a better wage. It starts at 9.50 an hour; you will be paid 10:00 after 4 hours of work after 5pm.
