Former Employee - Intern in Washington, DC (US)

I worked at US Department of Defense as an intern for more than a year

    Pros

Not treated as a useless intern, quickly given real responsibilities if you work hard/show you can handle it
Was able to meet a number of officials at all levels, who were often very friendly and took the time to talk with the interns, even though they were very busy
    Very interesting subject matter

    Cons

No pay for interns, hiring freeze meant there were little to no options to stay after school/the internship ended
It is a huge bureaucracy, so sometimes ways of doing things can seem pointless/require more work than necessary

    Recommends

    Pros

Get to work on a wide variety of projects that you can not do anywhere else.

    Cons

Antiquated I.T., can be hard to entice others to adopt new trends.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The world around us is changing culturall in the U.S. and that includes expected job perks and must-haves. If the DoD does not adapt it will be out competed for talent.

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Lots of resources that can broaden your skillset and a wide, diverse group of people to work with. Lots of training is available, however not all is as relevant as may be desired.

    Cons

Many bureaucratic hoops to jump through to accomplish seemingly simple tasks. Benefits aren't as good as what was offered for previous generations of the workforce. Travel tends to be sporadic and oftentimes to the same locations.

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The DoD has numerous organizations performing critical defense functions. The DoD leadership and culture encourage employees to grow and learn. It fosters and enables moving into more senior positions over time. Excellent employees generally advance more quickly than the mediocre.

    Cons

It is the worlds largest bureaucracy. Sometimes that creates frustratingly slow decision making.
