I have been working at US Department of Defense

    Pros

People, work satisfaction, chance to contribute and do meaningful work. Many chances for leadership and an emphasis on training and professional development.

    Cons

Difficult to get into, trend towards hiring from within. Resource constraints and the occasional threat of a furlough sometimes stunt organizational and individual growth.

I worked at US Department of Defense for more than 10 years

    Pros

Interesting tasks, support your country, sometimes high-level responsibilities.

    Cons

    Wasted skill sets of many individuals, lack true leadership in many organizations as well as they change too frequently to be an effective and efficient organization;

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Select best qualified individuals for the job not just friends, political affiliation, learn to properly led and correct the deficiencies of the organization vice be so concerned advancement.

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great salaries! Despite what many think, the salaries in the federal government are pretty competitive with private industry salaries. Although bonuses are becoming something of the past, they are offered.

    Cons

Biggest challenge is working through the bureaucracy and politics. Senior leaders still haven't gotten on board with technology, trusting their people, and truly having a work/life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Trust your people!

    Pros

Paid OT. Work weeks are 40 hrs only. All federal holdays are paid. There are 13 paid sick days a year. Great environment for white, conservative, Christian males (ideally older > 50yrs of age).

    Cons

It's like an episode of mad men w/o the alcohol and smoking. It's a pretty racist, sexist, bigoted environment. They removed the colored water fountains but the mentality stayed. This is not a good environment for any minority including women.

Department of the Air Force is hard to promote, unless you're in good with a hiring manager, who manipulate HR.

I have been working at US Department of Defense full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Working with our service members and the benefits (medical, dental, holidays)

    Cons

Not easy to promote. Too much corruption in the hiring process. Hiring managers have the ability to manipulate the system to place whomever they want into a position, no matter their education or experience.

    Pros

Benefits are outstanding, pay is good, good promotion opportunities in other agencies.

    Cons

Yes, one of the biggest downsides is when the government furloughed. That was something that no employee wants to face.
