Great organization

IT Manager (Current Employee)
San Antonio, TX (US)

I have been working at USAA full-time for more than a year

ProsBenefits - PTO- Bonus - parking garage - salary speakers brought in monthly for IT - Employee picnics and other gatherings , co workers become your friends - very friendly environment - lots of mentoring if you want it

ConsChallenges working with various silos within the organization - sometimes the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing - most really want to do the right thing

Advice to Senior ManagementFacilitate better interaction and communication across the individual organizations; introduce people before meetings start ; state meeting purpose

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great consulting client -- good people, challenging projects, opportunities to make a difference.

Consultant (Current Employee)
San Antonio, TX (US)

I have been working at USAA as a contractor for more than a year

ProsMinimal politics at the project level. Fantastic facility (San Antonio HQ). Treat consultants very well as long as they communicate well and perform to expectations (which are generally clear and fair). Strong moves toward greater adoption of self-service reporting, operational and predictive analytics, voice of customer analysis, leveraging big data and data science approaches.

ConsToo much chain-of-command, too many levels of decision-making and too much decision-by-committee. Big opportunities for greater program (horizontal) management rather than many silo-ed projects that frequently conflict or miss opportunities to combine efforts.

Advice to Senior ManagementUSAA has a great culture and a strong mission -- work on connecting your people and projects across internal organizations to do greater things faster -- make agile truly agile.

Very quick process once it is started.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at USAA

ProsVery informative, and let's you know what's they want, expect from there employees. Interviewer was very nice, and kept in touch through the hiring process. The directions to the Tampa campus was very simple. The recruiter prepared you for what the hiring manager would ask and what to mention. I felt very comfortable during the hiring process, and it was not intimidating at all.

ConsOnly con I have to say is when a phone interview is done on Saturday make sure the email states if it is a weekend it can be done first thing on Monday. The email that was sent to me states I would not be considered if I did not do the drug screen within 24 hrs from the email. Naturally, the places you can go to for the drug screen are closed on Sunday. I did it first thing on Monday, and it was accepted because they were closed on Sunday.

Working at USAA has been a wonderful & challenging!!

Senior Software Developer & Integrator (Current Employee)
San Antonio, TX (US)

I have been working at USAA full-time for more than 10 years

ProsI enjoy working in IT. I can make a difference by supporting the applications used by our military community! The CEO is someone I have great respect for and he leads the company based on honesty & integrity. We never lose sight of the fact that our mission is to be the provider of choice for the military and to always have their financial security as our top priority

ConsIT can be very demanding but management is always encouraging us to keep a balance between work and home.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt would be nice if the company officially recognized 'comp time' for IT employees since all of us are salaried whether or not we are actually in management.

ProsExcellent pay, excellent benefits, and great people.

ConsIf you are a customer service rep you are bombarded with calls non stop all day long. The selling or offering goals are high. For me it just wasn't a great fit. I'm not someone who likes selling jobs.
