I have been working at United Stationers full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Grading of the phone calls/emails are based on the customer experience and not hitting exact checklists to sound like a drone or computer when going over problems.

    Cons

Training only prepares you how to use the systems and not the situations you'll encounter on the actual job. While it's stressful at first, my team helps ease this until your comfortable (which could last several months).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please upgrade you're computer network and systems. Development of the new single website for our customers and your employees to use for everything is still much slower than the one we use that was built over 7 years ago. Be a leader in technology and focus on improving the customer experience by upgrading your customer service programs we use.

I have been working at United Stationers full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Decent compensation
    - Great mid-level managers
    - Some senior leaders are super friendly & down to earth

    Cons

    - Certain senior VPs are adverse to change
    - Whether you get to work from home depends on your director/VP - some get 2 days some get 0. There is not a consistent rule throughout the company
    - Certain directors have been here too long and are coasting
    - Industry is declining
    - Raises are small
    - No real career path.
    - MBA's are not valued or have no positions open after you get your MBA. Only way to advance is to leave.
    - HR is terrible.
    - Can be a boys clubs with older VPs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure the culture you talk about trickles down from top to bottom. Evaluate directors more often.

I worked at United Stationers full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pay and benefits were pretty good, and there are some good managers at mid-level. Lucky employees end up with one of these good leaders.

    Cons

Even in smaller departments, ambiguity and conflicting priorities rule the day. It's easy to flounder for a long, long time waiting to get clear direction, but taking initiative to lead or decide is politically dangerous.

I have been working at United Stationers

    Pros

Flexible to needs, lots of opportunities, office being resigned with associates in mind. HR willing to listen to associates, not an automated phone service

    Cons

You might not like an ever changing environment. Some turnover issues in some departments, but most are moving forward.
