pretty good pay, experience will depend on the department.

ProsPay is good for a university.

ConsUnimelb is all about brand image, it is not backed up at the level of the department.

Great pay, great location; lack of early preparation/organisation with tutorial content at times.

Faculty Tutor (Former Employee)
Melbourne

I worked at University of Melbourne as a contractor

ProsGreat location and pay was good, Flexibility with time tabling and schedule was appreciated. Senior staff and lecturers were very approachable and open to feedback; environment was highly collaborative.

ConsProblems with errors in tutorial solution sets and assignment model answers caused problems/delays with marking. Often received tutorial guides extremely late, leading to totes being run/developed "on the fly".
Extremely short handed tutorial staff on some units led to some extremely hectic weeks if one tutor was unavailable/away, particularly during assessments/marking. Students had a lot or problems with some subjects, where tutorial content/curriculum seemed unstructured and/or not directly related to lecture content.

Exciting experiences in a laid back environment.

Research Assistant (Former Employee)
Melbourne

I worked at University of Melbourne part-time for more than a year

Prosfruitful collaborations
most things on site but separated by walks through nice surroundings
easy to talk to students, lecturers, and co-workers

Consharder for international people to compete for jobs at times
geographically very distinct from collaborators in Europe and the US - makes international meetings harder

Advice to Senior Managementask workers about best plans to reorganize work spaces. They know more (if not best) what's needed where.

The University of Melbourne is an excellent place to learn that provides opportunities to join the academic staff

Casual Tutor (Former Employee)
Melbourne

I worked at University of Melbourne

ProsRewarding work where performance emphasis and feedback loops are centred on student rating of satisfaction. Even in the casual tutor role Melbourne university rewards those with demonstrated dedication to teaching and provides plenty of opportunity to shoulder additional responsibility for those who desire it and demonstrate the capability. I would highly recommend this role to anyone fortunate enough to be considered for this position.

ConsAlthough the recruitment process is selective and demanding, once recruited poor tutors receive minimal performance management despite poor teaching quality. It is possible to receive consistently poor rating without ever being coaching or receiving sanctions to improve.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is a gap with respect to continuous improvement of teaching quality. The university collects robust data on student satisfaction but does not capitalise this to its full extent by recognising 'star performers' and coaching underperformers
