I worked at Walt Disney Company

    Pros

A creatively driven company at its core; one that inspires and impresses with its ownership/dominance of the market. Highly driven, competitive, and economically sound. A place where you will find great talent.

    Cons

Sheer size of the organization results in high degree of bureaucracy. A lot of cooks in the kitchen for every discipline. Decision paralysis resulting from too much time taken on consensus building. Resistance to change in many respects, traditions that hold back new ideas. Changing career paths or crossing over into another area of the company is difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is so much untapped talent in the employee base - it remains untapped because upper level management doesn't recognize creativity on the part of anyone who doesn't have the words "Creative Director of ___" in their job title. A good idea shouldn't be ignored because of who or where it comes from.

Current Employee - Marketing in Burbank, CA (US)

I have been working at Walt Disney Company full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Smart, talented, passionate people
    - World class, global entertainment brands. The caliber of content, products, and experiences that Disney creates is consistently top notch.
    - Great resume builder
    - Interesting, challenging work
    - Powerful infrastructure/resources available
    - Many opportunities for advancement or learning new businesses. I think some people can get bogged down in staying in one division but if you're open to change, it's fairly easy to move within the company and try something new.
    - Recently updated vacation policy (salaried employees start with 3 weeks)
    - Great benefits (Insurance, 401k, pension, tuition reimbursement, etc.) and perks (Silver Pass, discounts, screenings, Macs, etc.)
    - Dining Do's: Walt's Chili in the Commissary and a handful of great lunch options in nearby Toluca Lake (Mo's, Olive & Thyme, Sweetsalt, Arde's)

    Cons

    - Layoffs happen constantly. If not in your division/department... somewhere else in the company. If they're not happening today...there are rumors that they're about to happen. Re-org, re-structure, lather, rinse, repeat. This can leave you with a "What if we're next?" anxiety and a sense that everyone is replaceable.
    - Politics, politics, politics
    - "Decision by committee" culture
    - Some teams understaffed
    - Promotions happen at a snail's pace and largely in designated cycles. When they do happen....
    - ....the inability to negotiate salary when promoted internally is frustrating but not unique to Disney.
    - Dining Don'ts: A few years ago, they replaced McCormick & Schmicks on Riverside with The Claim Jumper. Do not eat at The Claim Jumper.
