    I worked at Wikia full-time

    Pros

Wikia is an excellent place to begin a startup career. The environment still has a very startup-ey feel, and the experience gained there can be an excellent jumping-off point to something bigger. Pay and benefits have been increasing over the past few years to the point that they are reasonably competitive with similarly-positioned companies. The company is stable and given the large user base there is little threat of it going away.

    Cons

Members of senior management are constantly fighting amongst themselves, and the genuine animosity trickles down throughout the entire company. Marketing, especially, is led by individuals who have an undeserved sense of superiority and the missteps led by that department are largely responsible for the aforementioned animosity. There is a general sense of running in circles with little long-term vision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a coherent long-term vision for the company. Replace marketing management. Address the toxic culture problems directly rather than campaigning for better Glassdoor reviews.

I have been working at Wikia full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Great coworkers, colleauges depending on the team/group you are on.
    - Supportive senior managers, if they're around.
    - New SF office is awesome! Panoramic views of SF and Sutro Tower
    - Office management is professional and super helpful.
    - Company is showing growth both globally and internationally. Our newest office is in Tokyo, Japan!
    - Work from home is flexible and almost encouraged by management to ensure high productivity.
    - HR is caring and does a thankless job well.
    - Finance folks are super nice and approachable.
    - IT is super responsive and always gets us any gear requested.
    - International team members visit often and are a pleasure to work with.
    - Recently acquired a company called Huddler. Their workers are cool and fit well in the culture.

    Cons

    - Some uptight players. If you don't work with them, it's easy to avoid them.
    - Some mid-management folks lack a spine. Even when employees are talking loud and clear, they take no action until its too late.
    - There are some dirty jackasses in the office who clearly don't know how to clean up after themselves. Office management always hunts them down!
    - Company happy hours have been less as there's too many folks to accommodate now.
    - One or two bad apples get to ride the Wikia wave after they demonstrated the lack of skill to do their job. Yet, management keeps them around to allow them to collect a paycheck at the expense of the rest of us pulling their load.
    - Engineers are treated like 1st class citizens. The rest of us who aren't senior management (or management, in general) are peasants.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your reports. Why would you ask us to speak up then do nothing? Get rid of the low performers and promote those who show initiative to work. If you do acquire new companies and enployees, dedicate resources to their success. Don't let them float along without guidance.

I have been working at Wikia full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Wikia is definitely a decent place to work, but no place is perfect as some of the reviews seem to suggest about Wikia. However, I definitely would recommend working there. The CEO has a strong vision for the company and includes the entire company in quarterly meetings that brings the world offices together. It's not a long-term place to work for most positions but it's a great starting place or stepping stone. My experience with departments from community to product to sales to accounting were very positive. Free food, keg, company parties and flexibility make is competitive with other internet companies from an environment standpoint. Dog friendly office is a plus.

    Cons

Not every person in every department treats everyone with respect. Some sales people and most of marketing just aren't nice.. They seem to hold themselves on a pedestal that isn't deserved. The dislike between top executives spills out to the entire office and it's incredibly unprofessional to witness it. The CEO needs to get that in check. HR cannot be trusted. Gossipy environment needs to be brought under control because it makes a mostly positive work experience negative. A lot of employee turnover recently.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix the bad situation with department heads. Work to keep good talent.

    Untrustworthy management

I worked at Wikia full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Basic "start-up" perks that draw a lot of the younger and less experienced, but passionate and driven crowd.

Kegs, pool parties, snack closet, dog-friendly office, people who like to go out and have a good time together.

If you have less experience you probably have a decent shot at getting a job here anyways.

The Community Development, Community Support, and Sales organizations are well managed and fun to work with.

If you're into pop culture or gaming, this is a good company for you.

    Nerdy in an awesome way.

    Cons

Bottom line: Wikia ends up being a demoralizing and dispiriting place to work day in/day out.

Avoid Marketing, Product, Design and Engineering.

Complete lack of trust between teams leads to a lot of blame, finger pointing, and clique culture.

Projects are unreasonably scoped, resourced, and time boxed which leads to constant sense of failure and stress for prod dev teams.

Senior Management is visibly unable to work well together. This causes major issues that trickle down and create an unpleasant work environment.

Management is the embodiment of "do as I say, not as I do." One example: management harps incessantly that teams must make data driven decisions and then blatantly disregards that data when it doesn't support their preferred approach.

A lot of talented people don't stick around. People leave quickly over a short time span, lowering overall company moral. This happens every few months.

Unprofessional atmosphere, gossip, people storming out of meetings, etc.

Pays below market, annual reviews are late and shoddy.

*Management has campaigned in the past for current employees to write positive Glassdoor reviews. Take note of that when you read reviews here.*

    Pros

Some of the nicest colleagues and a great location. They were also not too strict on hours which was nice

    Cons

Senior management is very cliquey, and when one of them doesn't like you, they make it their mission to talk badly about you to your manager. They don't care about personal growth and never make an effort to see how their employees are doing in their current position. Stingy with raises and make you do multiple job while paying you the same.

I have been working at Wikia full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I absolutely love working at Wikia. Strong leadership, strong CEO vision, fun culture, diverse people...it's great. Benefits and salary are solid, and the company has a real family feel to it, even though the company is growing by leaps and bounds. Great opportunities to learn, grow and advance. I trust my manager, and definitely respect senior leadership as well. Wikia has a huge community of active users and the company is very community-centric. Respectful, fun colleagues and very friendly people. Great place for someone looking to move up the ladder and learn more about different aspects of tech life. Dog friendly! Love the Wikia dogs!

    Cons

Due to multiple locations and offices throughout the world, it can sometimes be a challenge to get a response to something right away, but this isn't the fault of the company; just part of being a global company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please keep encouraging open communication and trust. Would like to see the internal library of leadership books expanded and would like to see more discussion about those or do reading club?

I have been working at Wikia full-time

    Pros

If you are thoughtful and present your data-driven arguments well, you can get things done rather quickly. The CEO and the rest of the execs are incredibly approachable and with it.

    Cons

Tough to keep the culture in tact when you grow 100% in a few years but we've done a good job moving from startup to fun, agile, but real company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Intra office travel is great... Keep it up and maybe increase it for select positions.

    Pros

It's an ok place to work. Nothing to make a career of. But pretty decent. Cool people. Crappy tech.

    Cons

The campaign to boost ratings here is sad and defensive. Own the stuff that ain't grt and make it better instead of sugar coating. Ppl aren't stupid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the Glassdoor white washing. It's grody.
