I have been working at Wood Group PSN full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Smart people, interesting work in local and international oil and gas projects. Practices what it preaches in terms of safety - reminded daily of the importance of a strong safety culture.

    Cons

Limited personal development opportunities at the moment due to limited work (on the back of slow economic conditions and lack of operator activity). Do not feel valued as an employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lacking in definition of defined career paths. Considerably more can be done to make employees feel valued - it's the little things that count.

    Cons

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Its important to share learning's amongst all your team, why have people struggle with the same problem at different sites when its already solved somewhere.

I have been working at Wood Group PSN full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The best part of the job is you usually have little to do with Wood Group unless you have training that is due. The job is actually up to your client that you will work for, and it all depends on how your client treats you. My experience is great, but I have personal connections with the client.

    Cons

Large company, and has very little personal touch to anything. Most offices have several thousand employees, and you are basically just a body filling a position. The con is Wood Group will hire just about anyone if they meet the minimum requirements. It seems that most employees are able to bounce around when they get fired by their client, and avoid being terminated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management does a good job with training events, and doing what they usually do with a company this large.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to look more and more outside home countries for talent and compensate equally

    Pros

All in all Wood Group is a great place to work. Coworkers are friendly and easy to get a long with. Management is very flexible and approachable.

    Cons

Everything is based on the price of oil so job security is always an uncertain.

I have been working at Wood Group PSN as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

The teams in the regional offices have a "in it together" attitude, in which good engineering is delivered despite the overall corporate governance. No previous expereince of Oil & Gas industry is required, the team helps to bring new entrants on quickly.

    Cons

There is a lot of uncertainity within the industry at the moment (Dec 2014). Rates for contractors are below average though the long hours compensate; salaries have been frozen with little in the way of a benefits package. This is a "bargain basement" type company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There’s a perception at the moment that through cutting rates and freezing salaries the industry will be saved. This single minded approach is akin to a "race to the bottom" approach which has never worked out well in the medium to long term; in the short term it alienates and destroys good corporate cultures. The current focus should be efficiencies and lean as well as salary/rate constraint.
