Nice coworkers

ConsNot enough pay. Supervisors try to limit your hours to save the company money. No opportunity for advancement. Good for high school/college students but nit anyone with a degree unless you want to work with children or are desperate or a job

Long Beach, CA (US)

Current Employee – been working at YMCA part-time for more than 7 years

ProsI love working with the children. The job itself is incredibly rewarding. The YMCA does do an excellent job of instilling positive social values in the children that participate in the programs offered. It is a good place to work if you need a stable job with consistent hours. It is also a good place for college students to work.

ConsThere is an incredible lack of communication between the top managers themselves and the lower level employees. Many managers, that I have encountered were promoted because they were friends with other managers. Therefore, they had no experience and struggled to do their jobs properly.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsistent meetings with employees would greatly benefit everyone. There needs to be more communication. A way to get feedback and to be able to provide it ourselves is an important factor that is missing at the YMCA.

Kalamazoo, MI (US)

Current Employee – been working at YMCA part-time for more than 7 years

ProsVery family friendly, no cliques within staff. Many family nights and lots of free t shirts! Salary for instructor isn't bad. Membership is free and so is child care.

ConsManagement at the fitness level is either incompetent and needs to retire, or else so knowledgeable that unless you have a specific masters degree, you aren't respected. Classes are hard to secure and budget is extremely tight. Good ideas by staff are often dismissed due to "budget".

Advice to Senior ManagementEmployees have so many good ideas! Ask us how to advance programs or make them better.

Sudbury, ON (Canada)

Current Employee – been working at YMCA full-time for more than a year

ProsYMCA Sudbury lives and breathes it's core values: caring, excellence, honesty, respect, and responsibility. The organization has an excellent reputation in the community and so it's easy to take pride in working for this company.

YMCA, in this era of contractual employees, does its best to hire people full-time, especially if they have successfully completed their contract.

YMCA strongly believes in professional development and many opportunities are available throughout the year.

There are occasions to interact with many executives, whether it's the local CEO or General Manager or the President and CEO at the National Level which helps with feeling connected to the organization and provides a better understanding of the corporate agenda.

ConsAs with any non-profit/charitable organization, employees are often expected to do more with less.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen there is feedback to provide, management's doors are always open so no need to express anything here.
