    Pros

    Great fun, friendly workplace
    Relaxed
    Nice benefits

    Cons

My manager was not encouraging and being connected to the HR director at the time it was hard to put forward.
Made redundant very soon after hire
Frustrating as implementing change and progression was held back

    Advice to Management

Well back then it would be buckle up, I'm sure now things have changed. (Hopefully)

    Pros

Getting to listen to new music
    Friendly team of colleagues
Had a rota system so got to mix tasks up a bit
Lenient with piercings and weird hair colours
Watching the managers sweat when the CEO turned up for a visit.

Good hours for a temporary contract
    Discount despite being a temp.

    Cons

Worked at a Pop-up store, was told we would get 60p above minimum wage during interview, then we were texted later that it was in fact minimum wage.

Thought working in HMV would be dynamic and interesting, but turned out to be a soulless profit making exercise. Maybe I've been watching the movie 'Empire Records' too much.

Took the fun out of customer service and retail by treating customers like gods.

Some of the tasks we were told to were a bit silly.
    (1) Stand at the entrance and hand out offer leaflets, of which customers would pick up then discard in various places around the store, e.g inside DVD cases.
    (2) Walk around the store in a clockwise fashion and approaching customers and asking if they need any help, while your colleague would do the same, so you would end up annoying customers twice. Also to hand out more leaflets.
    (3) The mentioned walk was briefly updated with the most ridiculous thing ever. We had to selotape DVD's together like you would be holding a spread deck of cards, and you would hold this in 1 hand while offering assistance. Bizarre marketing ploy.

We were also told despite being on a 6 week contract, that there would be possibilities for career opportunities at the closest permanent store, but we were told strictly no positions will be available by other management. Very confusing.

Oh and the pink Tshirt. Not so good for guys

    Advice to Management

Better pay and don't bend the truth about permanent opportunities.

    Pros

    - Totally submersed in the entertainment business
    - Above average salary at the management level (at least for retail standards)
    - Upper management and Head Office does offer lots of support
    - Extremely high paced environment will sure teach you a thing or two about time management

    Cons

    - Extremely difficult goals to achieve
    - Not achieving these goals can easily put you in the dog house
    - Very high to almost ridiculous standards in terms of day-to-day operations. Very frequent sessions of ear chewing for not completing tasks in nearly impossible amount of time
    - Like most retail companies; management never get paid overtime
    - Everyone wants to work there and head office knows it, so you'll rarely see a part-timer make more than minimum wage

    Pros

I enjoyed the varied employees I worked for plus, at the time the discounts.

    Cons

The title says it all. Head office was never forward thinking and this is why the company has not faired well.

    Advice to Management

They need to really listen to the management team. They hire them for a reason but never truly listen. We are the pulse of what customers want, we are in the field but unfortunately what we think is never put in place.

    Pros

great company to work for. the people there are fantastic and I really enjoyed my time there. the company culture is very positive and they will help you grow.

    Cons

As the music and movie industry has changed so rapidly over the past decade so has hmv. They struggled a little bit to find their new identity amidst all the the external changes.
