Sharing is Caring: Open Source at Groupon

Groupon is fueled by open source software. We run on software built in the open, supported by the community, and shared to move technology forward. While we give back when we can to the projects we use and share new creations, the true value resides in the people that make it happen, and that's why...

Groupon Intern Sarah: No "Intern Projects" here

The #GrouponU Blog is back for 2014. We'll regularly feature a Groupon intern or recent college grad telling you about their experience first-hand tackling challenging problems and getting to know our teams. Today's entry is from Sarah in our Chicago office. Sarah has worked cross-functionally with many teams and explains how, at Groupon, there are...

Groupon – Why Work For Us?

Who We are, How We Work

We provide a global marketplace where people can buy just about anything, anywhere, anytime. We’re enabling real-time commerce across an expanding range of categories including local businesses, travel destinations, consumer products, and live or lively events.

Culturally, we believe that great people make great companies and that starting with the customer and working backward moves us forward.  We also value self-awareness, candor, lunch and WiFi. If we match with you, please apply to join us.

Be sure to follow our People Blog

We view culture as a composite of our mission and values. A tremendous source of pride for us, our culture is inclusive of the work we do, and how we do it. Embracing change, thinking long-term, and continuously making decisions grounded in customer worship are a few tenets we live by. Surprise is key for us too, and that manifests in numerous areas, though most noticeably in our Editorial voice. We think taking our jobs seriously while not taking ourselves too seriously can be a healthy way to grow as a company.

A new way to discover local causes, rally together, and lend a helping hand

Groupon Grassroots is our philanthropic arm featuring a wide variety of great local projects that subscribers can support. Every campaign connects consumers with enough people to achieve something awesome they couldn't have done alone. While Groupon helps build local businesses in each market, Groupon Grassroots helps support the communities where these business flourish.

In addition to helping these great causes through our consumers, our employees regularly get a chance to participate in projects themselves. We have also formed a Green Committee that works to keep our workplace sustainable, from getting rid of trash cans to providing reusable mugs for coffee and drinks.

Groupon’s Employee Volunteer Program is how we harness our collective employee power for positive change. Groupon employees regularly volunteer their time, skills and creative insights to help those in need and to help have a measurable impact on growing local economies, promoting distinctive communities and deepening our customers’ attachment to place.  Groupon is uniquely positioned to address a wide range of needs and issues in diverse communities due to the range of skills and talents our diverse staff hold—if there’s a need, we can fill it.

I have been working at Groupon full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Love and hate relationship but definitely more love - no other place I would rather be at.
Great vibe and amazing group of people from operations to sales to senior management.
Plenty of room for career progression
Free breakfast, fruit, Friday drinks, social events and a free day off on your b-day
Provide courses internally or externally to up skill when ever necessary

    Cons

It is a sales company so very results driven. Pushed to your limits and can be extremely stressful
Constant change from technology to processes - As soon as you get used to one thing it gets changed/updated and have to learn a new way to do the same thing

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Celebrate the wins with your respective teams and the company as a whole more often rather than the continual drive for more.
Despite a lot of opportunity for promotion there are no clear pathways - something to look into.
Keep on being involved with the day to day stuff and It is great to be able to see all of senior management on the floor and be approachable to ask for advice or even just a chat.
