Marin Software - 30+ days ago

Job Description

Marin Software is experiencing tremendous business growth and is seeking to add an outstanding individual with strong prior MySQL Database experience to our Operations team.

This position is a deeply technical role requiring extensive MySQL experience, including well-rounded knowledge of MySQL internals. As a part of a small, globally distributed DBA team, you will assist in supporting the MySQL database eco-system that powers Marin’s applications, as well as play a critical role in advising software engineers on scalability and performance best practices throughout the development process.

As a SaaS company providing an analytics platform to clients, data is everything at Marin. The individual in this role should have stellar communications skills and be excited by the challenge of building a redundant, high performance database platform that scales to petabytes of data.

Life is complicated enough without over-engineering things – our design philosophy is that simpler is usually better. Anything that needs to be done more than twice should probably be automated, and proper planning and testing mean less stress and fewer errors in times of pressing need. We strive to have an ego-free work environment. Above all, Operations is a close-knit team that depends on each other, and we’re looking for people who have the skills, work ethic and sense of humor to help us grow and stay true to these values.

Responsibilities
This role requires a motivated self-starter who can hit the ground running, quickly taking on tasks and applying their strong, prior experience to tackle the challenges presented. This would include:

  • Design and build MySQL solutions that are both highly available and highly performing.
  • Support the development team in building features that perform at scale.
  • Troubleshoot database-related application performance issues and recommend solutions.
  • Assist in the administration, management and monitoring of all MySQL database systems.
  • Support various internal database users in forming optimal queries to fulfill their data needs.
  • Develop scripts and tools to support any or all of the above.
  • Protect the safety and integrity of the database platform through backups and securing of MySQL instances.

  • Requirements
  • 5+ years hands-on experience with MySQL, with detailed understanding of internals, specifically MyISAM and InnoDB storage engines, Replication and Partitioning.
  • Experience with Percona XtraBackup.
  • Experience with MySQL 5.0, 5.1 and 5.5 major releases.
  • Bachelor degree in Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent.
  • Extremely honed problem-solving and debugging ability.
  • Strong Linux administration skills, CentOS 5.5+ advantageous.
  • Proficiency in BASH scripting and one of Perl/Python/PHP.
  • Familiarity with regular expressions for pattern matching and replacement.
  • Understanding of both OLTP and OLAP concepts.
  • Understanding of Java, MySQL Connector/J and Hibernate concepts.
  • Understanding of Hadoop and Map/Reduce concepts a plus.
  • MySQL Certifications valued, but not required.

  • This is an on-site, full time salaried position located in the financial district of San Francisco, (one block from Bart station). Compensation depends on prior experience.
