What does a Data Center Technician do?

Data center technicians are the skilled hands-on professionals who provide various services that keep data servers and hardware networks operating smoothly. They serve as the first line of defense in safeguarding a company’s valuable and sensitive information. They complete preventative maintenance of equipment and network devices and perform tasks including running cables, improving physical security, and checking utilities. They examine power sources and heating and cooling controls to ensure a data center will not overheat and troubleshoot and repair servers with hardware or network issues.

Data center technicians are called on to quickly fix issues and keep business data flowing if errors occur. They monitor and maintain the operation of all network processes and evaluate machine temperature levels for optimal performance. They must maintain accurate work records and event logs and create concise virtual information reports to keep management informed of status updates. Data center technicians need a bachelor's or an associate's degree in a technical field including computer science or engineering and at least one year in tech support experience.
