Pros

WorkingMouse is an excellent workplace for those starting off in their careers. Processes for scoping and developing projects are robust and considered. Generally, if you are comfortable interacting with clients and have an ability to deconstruct a problem efficiently, you will do well at this company regardless of whether you are a designer or a developer. If you have a sparse portfolio but demonstrate excellent people skills, work ethic, and a desire to learn, then I would recommend applying if the role appeals to you. A good-looking portfolio is less important than an ability to empathise with users. Team culture is highly valued at WorkingMouse. In my time there I found my colleagues easy to get along with for the most part. HR is supportive and overall I would say that people at WM are convivial and highly skilled. Designers and developers can expect to learn a great deal when scoping and developing projects. WorkingMouse has an extensive Way of Working to help you plan the best way forward, and you have a lot of autonomy to find creative solutions. In summary, if you are a recent graduate, or junior/intermediate designer (in the industry for less than 4 years), then this is a fantastic place to get your foot in the door.

Cons

WorkingMouse has a flat hierarchy with essentially no room to grow. There are some veterans/senior staff at the company - most, if not all of them, have been with the company since its very early days. These staff members are embedded within the handful of senior positions available, effectively blocking the growth of new hires. This essentially means that there are two types of employees at WorkingMouse: founding staff members, and then everyone else. For this latter category, my perception is that the managers expect that you will stay for a couple of years and move on. Climbing the ladder WorkingMouse is more accurately described as jumping up and across to another ladder at another company. Compensation is average to poor, again, this is because WorkingMouse generally hires young graduates. As a result of the above, turnover is frequent and this can affect morale. More mature/experienced candidates should be aware that this company is heavily staffed by workers under the age of 25. Company culture and benefits reflect this. Enter at your own risk.

Advice to Management

I think more assistance for outgoing staff would be helpful - for example, pointing staffers to other industry placements or helping with references. I was happy to provide a review as an alumni upon request, it would be nice to have this alumni concept be a two-way street, perhaps via a newsletter or invite to occasional company event, or by assisting us on our continued careers. This may be tricky as not everyone leaves on good terms but it's something to think about.
