      Area Manager Interview

      11 Nov 2014
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon in Sept 2014

      Interview

I approached the Amazon recruiters at my school's career fair. After fielding the Area Manager recruiter's initial questions, I was invited to interview with another recruiter in two days. At this interview, I was asked three behavioral questions to assess my ability to manage and interact with people, and a math question to assess my ability to problem solve. This interview lasted an hour, and within 48 hours I was asked to come out to one of the distribution centers for a final interview. Amazon was very accommodating in terms of getting candidates to this interview stage, in some cases flying candidates out and having rental cars waiting for them, and in others putting candidates into contact with one another to drive in together. This interview lasted the better part of an entire day, and included a tour of the facility, and three interviews with a current area manager, a senior distribution manager (I believe), and a human resources representative. This stage of the interview also included a more rigorous math problem to assess my ability to efficiently utilize given resources. I was sent this information, along with other reading materials prior to this final interview, to prepare. While I did not end up being offered a position with Amazon, I applaud the expedient and efficient manner in which they handled the entire interview process. From beginning to end, the interview/hiring process took no more than two weeks, so there was none of that anxious waiting to hear back from them.

      Question 1

The second interview's math question, while not being algebraically difficult, needs to be completed in 15 minutes on site and requires you to make the simplest possible assumptions.

All virtual. STAR interview questions (situation task action result). Think of examples of tough situations you had to deal with. I think I had 2 or 3 interviews before I got an offer. Pretty smooth process overall.

      Interview

or an Amazon Level 4 (L4) Area Manager phone interview, you will face 2 to 3 main behavioral questions, alongside a highly possible operational math screening question. Because L4 is typically an entry-level management role (often targeted at recent college graduates or individuals with early-stage leadership experience), the focus shifts heavily toward potential, basic problem-solving, and your ability to lead groups of people
