      News Editor Interview

      23 July 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Blavity in June 2019

      Interview

Beware. The company is attempting to masquerade full-time, high-stress editorial positions as remote and "part-time." I applied to the job thinking it would be a great part-time gig that would guarantee a steady income that would work with my freelance life, only to find out I would be expected to work FIVE DAYS a week for six hours a day in the middle of the day. That could've been fine, but the initial salary they offered was only one dollar above my state's minimum wage, BUT with the expectation of managing and editing other writers in addition to pumping out my own content. That's a managing editor role (which commonly makes 70,000+ a year). Not a barely-above minimum-wage "news editor" role. I thought, hey, at least this will be great editing experience, until I heard they produce a story around every 30 mins to an hour with a team of only three. Which sounds like a hellish, 2009-esque way of doing things. I wish they would have told me all of this before making me do the edit test.
