I applied in-person. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Canadian Tire (Port Coquitlam, BC) in Sept 2011
Interview
One brings their resume into the store, where you are briefly interviewed by a manager. The resume then goes to the owners, and they decide based upon your references, experience and the manager's rating of your interview. (Based upon presentation of both resume and self; confidence, clothing/ appearance, hours available).
Extremely straightforward questions, mainly behavioural. Questions like "tell me about a time you had a challenge and how did you deal with it?" I would advise to have some answers prepared for very basic questions, have some specific examples of your own experiences that you can tailor to each question.

Often a single in-person interview with the store manager or department supervisor; sometimes a short phone screening first. Focus on customer service, teamwork, availability, and handling busy or difficult situations.
just a conversation with the manager to see if you are good at socializing as you will be greeting a lot of people. no hard questions, just simple behavioural ones and going through resume experience
