      Account Executive Interview

      26 Aug 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Engine in Aug 2021

      Interview

I was first contacted by a recruiter. The first screening was standard and boiler-plate. The first interview with the Hiring Manager was fairly positive - they asked me to describe my previous roles and company (essentially getting me to "sell" to him without saying as much, although it was obvious that was what was happening.) Hiring manager was confident and told me I was going to final round of interviews with Sales VP, just had to do the aptitude and personality tests first. I know I scored high on the aptitude test, but I was rejected from the job for what I believe was my personality assessment. I answered as truthfully as possible, which meant my "Self Confidence" score was fairly low. I believe this is what put me out of the running. This low "Self Confidence" is due to severe anxiety and depression in my personal life, but not once has this affected my ability to perform in my career (see: 3+ years of very successful sales experience at multiple companies.) Personality assessments tell hiring managers a very brief, truncated story about a candidate's personality, and should be avoided. Unless you want your entire personality boiled down into five categorical scores (or you want to lie on the test and answer the questions in the obvious way they want you to) then I'd avoid this company and their interview process.

      Interview

The interview process started off solid, but it went downhill fast once I met the hiring manager and VP of Sales. The conversation felt like a waste of time. A lot of the questions didn’t really matter, and they kept going on about “culture” and the “perfect fit,” which honestly just felt like buzzwords. What really stood out was how unprofessional it felt. The hiring manager was on his phone. It set a bad tone right away. There was no talk about coaching, training, or how they actually support reps, just pressure about high expectations and big goals. That’s not exciting; it’s a red flag. Recruiters are AMAZING thouugh.

Engaging interview process. Ended up going a different route but enjoyed the conversations. They asked questions related to prior sales experience. They also asked about times you've overcame challenges or adversity in life. It's a startup so they want self starters and competitive types.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Engine (Denver, CO) in June 2025

      Interview

I went through 2 steps -1 Recruiter phone screen -1 Directly with Sales Manager -Had I proceeded, an in person mock-call would've taken place in their downtown Denver office. Recruiter was super kind and had a nice convo. She'd been with Engine for a few months. The manager had been there about a month and was clearly new. It was interesting- nice guy with some nice conversation and could tell a lot about the company, They're looking for someone who can close a lot of short-cycle sales and does a lot of outreach, They said about 50 calls per day believe. I couldn't get clarity on the commission structure- given it's a free platform. They're in the office everyday pretty much in downtown Denver, and doesn't sound like a lot of flexibility with that. Everyone kind of sits on one floor from what I could see. Clearly rapidly growing and I would guess they want to sell in a couple of years. 70K base is what they offered. I get the sense of a high churn, just based off the tenure of people I connected with and found on Linked In. Seems like you hit your quota or you're gone without much leash.

      Question 1

Tell me about a deal you closed with a short sales cycle? How many calls do you make per week? Where do you feel like you fall short in your role?
