This was the most misleading and underhanded interview of my career to date. It began very well, but I gradually recognized the inexperience, ignorance, and lack of communication associated with small, poorly managed companies.
Initially, my interviews went very well. I enjoyed my discussions with management and they seemed to like me as well. The first interview went so well they invited me back for a second that lasted well over two hours. I took this as a sign that the company was expressing a genuine interest in my candidacy.
At this point in the interview process we began discussion benefits, PTO, and the salary. During this discussion I was informed of the salary range and felt that my senior level experience placed me at the top end of this range.
I was presented a formal offer and, as I generally do, countered with a tasteful letter that said I was look forward to beginning work, but hoped I could increase the salary based on my experience and the range we discussed during the interview.
The next communication I had with JPB was a voicemail stating they were taking back the offer and it was presented to another candidate.
