They said they will get back to me in a week's time. I waited n no reply. So I emailed them asking the status of my application. No reply. And after a month I received an email saying we selected another more eligible candidate.

Use Trie (or Suffix Tree). In C++. there is no such data structure, so have to write it. Build a function named "std::vector GetStringsWithPrefix(std::string prefix)"
