I provided an example where, at my previous job, my coworker had left our designated area of self service checkouts to serve customers on a 1:1 checkout despite the fact that there were already other people in that other area. His doing so left me in a bad position trying to serve a busy stream of up to 10 customers at a time. I explained that I asked him to return to our area and that we were both there for the reason of providing more points of contact for customer service in such a busy area. Being the senior staff member I was in the position to request he stay in our area unless told otherwise by another supervisor.
