    Data Scientist Interview

    Anonymous Interview Candidate in Sydney
    No Offer
    Negative Experience
    Difficult Interview

    Application

The process took a week. I interviewed at Tyro Payments (Sydney).

    Interview

The interview was extremely bad. Where do I event start!
    1. I send the application on a Friday. By Monday I got an automated email asking me to attempt 2 hours of Hacker Rank test. They gave a 4 day window to complete this test. While for some this may look reasonable, mind you their recruitment process is mentioned anywhere on their website or job poster. You could have having a busy week, and his test in dropped on you out of no where. In short no mental preparation or thought is given from the candidates pov.

    2. Nowhere did they write on their website or job poster, what the test it for? How is this related to the job? No where did I come across the topics they are testing on. Other than the standard python, r, sql. Turns out from the tests, it felt like they are looking for candidates with background in computer science. Given that data scientists come from diverse fields and background, tyro seems to be filtering for candidates with a specific background. Some of the question went into theoretical side of data bases and ApIs.

3.Nill human communication at every step was infuriating. Based on the results of the test or based on if you could make time to attempt it in 4 days, they send an automated rejection email. I felt like I was reduced to a work horse who would only bring my skillset to work and nothing more. If your personal philosophy agreed with this kind of treatment may be tyro may not be bad place for you.

    Personally extremely bad hiring process.
