Pros

- if you are inexperienced, you'll learn how to plan and execute an infrastructure project (putting in new hardware, moving data centers)

Cons

- Doesn't understand differences between infrastructure project management and SaaS or COTS, but takes them on anyway; not delivering expected value - No work/life balance with expectations too high for socializing with clients

Thanks for your post! I apologize that your experience over the 3 years you spent with 120VC was generally negative! For job seekers: 120VC doesn't claim any subject matter expertise outside of pure play Project Portfolio Management. We don't market SaaS or COTS or any subject matter to our clients or future Team Members. What we provide our clients is a mature approach to rocking projects regardless of subject matter. We DO consider subject matter when hiring new team members. If we have a SaaS or COTS project, we hire Project Managers with experience on those Projects, and then train them in the use of the best practices required by the Project Management field today. To the Alum that left this post: I am unaware of any client that is unsatisfied with our knowledge of subject matter. I am also puzzled by your "Disapproves of the CEO", as you know I don't work closely with the Senior Project managers, and wouldn't have directly contributed to your experience at 120VC. I would welcome an email from you directly or anonymously to HR with some details on your experience, the comments about customers being dissatisfied and how I could have served you better as CEO. You can send to Jason@120vc.com or human.resources@120vc.com. I appreciate Glassdoor for the opportunities it give me to improve the business.

Pros

Some of the concepts and templates are good. The CEO is charismatic and open to new ideas.

Cons

They have a small client base and if a project for which you were hired is cancelled, the chances are high that you’ll be out of a job. They’re too small to negotiate a discount with private medical insurance companies – my actual, out-of-pocket cost was the same whether I bought the coverage through them or privately You’re strongly encouraged to write positive reviews of their online classes which are reviewed by management before posting – as an employee, you are not going to risk making negative comments. Everything you do as a project manager must follow strict rules. During my weekly employee reviews, I was docked points for a missing comma or not enough spaces before a required dash.

I apologize for your experience. I believe that employers bear the greater responsibility for ensuring future team members are a good fit for the culture and capable of performing the job. When someone is hired that is not ultimately a good fit, they are sure to have a bad experience and end up in transition. This is one of the reasons we give 2 weeks’ severance with full benefits to all Team Members that are laid off, regardless of how long they have been with the company. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help with your search. Jason@120vc.com. For job seekers: I don't want to be too critical about the comments in the post above, but want to give you the necessary information to evaluate them. 120VC has more demand for their services than we can hire to fulfill. We are always hiring Senior Project Managers. Therefore, if a client were to cancel a Project, it would be very easy to transition a PM that is performing to another Project. This is always preferred to bringing someone in from the outside.

Pros

The training courses and guidebook apply to all projects. Management had a large focus on personal growth and the company is full of opportunities to advance your career. They also have many well known clients so there is opportunity to work in many different environments.

Cons

Actively managing client work and internal work can be challenging. Internal reporting takes a significant amount of time putting the typical work week above 40 hours. Work/life balance can be difficult to manage.
