I have been working at AECOM full-time for more than a year

    Pros

A very good working environment with a supportive and encouraging management team to enable employees to develop professionally. An endless amount of opportunities due to the wide range of disciplines across the organisation and diversity of projects delivered by the organisation.

    Cons

A very large company with a complex organisational structure, which can be difficult to understand.

    Advice to Management

Continue to attract talented employees and continue to develop the organisation.

I worked at AECOM full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Resources are endless if you really need them, diverse teams.

    Cons

Where to begin...let's start with the obvious gender enforcing going on...if you're female and willing to do a bit of extra work (means going to endless trainings and meetings on how to be a leader!)...you're on your way to the top, guaranteed! I have never seen more incompetent people being put on such demanding high positions as in AECOM, purely based on gender and being part of the "group". You absolutely cannot... be a design manager with zero experience in the actual design, right? Well, you can in AECOM, fake it until you make it people are most welcome here. There is not evem subtle bragging here...people openly brag how awesome they are and how they will be promoted to higher positions, I have never seen this anywhere in my career! Once they loose couple of tenders, cutting heads begins, they fired some of the most loyal personnel, people with over 20 years of work history in the company...way to treat such people AECOM! And of course as a result of that, many more people left annoyed and all of a sudden some teams lost most crucial members in matter of weeks.

    Advice to Management

Since AECOM has the best management in the world they don't need advice how to run multi billion business, well in fact in some offices you wonder how is it possible that the whole business is still running with such incompetent people running it.

I worked at AECOM full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good variety of projects. Good, modern offices.

    Cons

Open plan desks meant it was often difficult to concentrate on work due to the noise of nearby co-workers. Large company, so administration of issues outside of your direct team can be impersonal and antagonistic. Some tendency to hire too many people and then make a large number of people redundant the following year. Very "politically correct", e.g referring to "holiday season" instead of Christmas etc, (but... most big companies are that way now anyway).

    Advice to Management

Ensure existing staff can see that there is a clear track or opportunity for internal promotion. In some years it seemed like all senior positions went to outsiders rather than internal promotions.

I have been working at AECOM

    Pros

Average company during the boom times, can't cope during downturn.

    Cons

Just a number Too much focus on billability Immature project processes (extremely delinquent) Loyalty not rewarded in the slightest Top heavy - redundancies target the troops and management always survive Lack of management accountability - fear of dealing with any conflict Consistently repeat mistakes at higher level and expects different results Claim to be a company of integrity and high ethical standards,... couldn't be further from the truth

I have been working at AECOM full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    1. Safety oriented, not a small thing when so much of the work we do can leave you seriously injured or dead. 2. Flexible; need a mall managed, a skyscraper built, a defense site's O&M managed, from gates and guards to power, heating, and cooling, or even a hyperloop, no problem. 3. Purchase or URS gained much-needed processes, as well as things like Chatter, an internal "LinkedIn" type site that provides a variety... of updates and networking opportunities In real time.

    Cons

Legacy AECOM is powered by smart people going "Let's do this", but not having a fully developed idea as to how it should be done. A vision is not a process, and good intentions don't positive award fee scores make.

    Advice to Management

Look to bidding strategies that don't undermine employee long term benefits like matching 401k's. Sure, you won our contract with the lowest offer; you bid to win, but now we have to operate that contract, while taking a hit towards our long-term financial goals.

I have been working at AECOM for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Great people. - Great career opportunities if you are ruthlessly corporate in your outlook - high turnover creates lots of space to move up. - Australian management seemingly/finally committed to improvement - but then they desperately need to after years of shrinkage, layoffs, under performance, law suits, and buying great profitable businesses with vibrant cultures that shrivel away to a shadow of the success... and profile that they had (Maunsell, Basset, EDAW, Earth Tech, ENSR, Davis Langdon, URS) - Free tea, coffee and biscuits, and one banana per week.

    Cons

    - For years, everything about the way the business is run has been focussed on short term financial performance - which has demoralised and alienated most staff with a result that unsustainable staff turnover and zero profit is the norm. And it didn't work anyway. - Rated as one of the Top Ten Worst employers in the US, winner of NO Employer of Choice awards, winner of - wait for it - only 1 Beatons Client Choice... award (not repeated - and rated in the bottom quartile in every criteria for the last four years). - Relentless corporate propaganda about what a great place this is to work. - salaries benchmarked on industry median and no performance bonus scheme no matter what you achieve - AECOM talks about being the best then structurally aims for the median, then fails to achieve it. - today's announcement - all former AECOM (as opposed to URS) staff now have to work and additional 7% hours/week for no extra pay or recognition - all part of profitability, "flexibility" and being Employer of Choice. Congratulations valued personnel, your contracts have already been amended - and remember, if through your personal failings, you do not reach your amended billability targets for more than a few weeks, you will regretfully, be downsized.

    Advice to Management

It all starts with your staff. Actually treat them like they have any sort of value as people, actually reward performance and try to be BETTER employers that the competition that is thrashing you - and some of the performance issues might actually resolve themselves.
