    Pros

    Some great people in the engine room, and some big projects. Otherwise, none at all. A negative rating would be appropriate, however that's not an option.

    Cons

    If you value your life, health and family stay away from this organisation. Don’t be fooled by the glitzy marketing and alluring LinkedIn posts about family-friendliness, gender equality and safety campaigns - the reality behind the smoke and mirrors is very different. Sadly, it wasn’t always like that, and it’s a crying shame. If you are a garden-variety project manager with little talent, technical ability, aspiration or personality who is happy to be a commodity in a homogenised team of battery hens, AECOM wants you!! If you are ambivalent about quality and comfortable with adding little value to clients but can deftly knock out an invoice, then come on down. If you are comfortable with recurring poor performance in the annual Beaton survey and have little regard for client service, the managers will love you. If you are top notch with spreadsheets, aspire to be a manager and have an EQ of a soil sample, there’s a place and long career there for you. If you think that jobs for talentless, like-minded mates is sound business practice, you’ll go far at AECOM. Work life balance and genuine care for people’s physical and mental wellbeing is non-existent. As evidenced by the recent retrenchment of a large proportion of the safety team (amongst dozens and dozens of other capable professionals across the country) - including the leader on mental wellbeing. There’s no job number or revenue to be made so on safety, so it’s relegated to a low-priority overhead status. These redundancies simply verify that having resources to support the safety of the staff is just a nice-to-have. There are still a couple left, so that keeps a tick in that box. There’s still plenty of highly paid managers though to flog the staff just a little bit harder, keep them on their toes and squeeze them to drive up utilisation and profit. But it wasn’t always like that. If you wound back the clock you would see a very different workplace – safety was indeed the highest priority, and there was a positive and people-oriented culture. Technical excellence, quality and client service were valued. Business development and proposal writing didn’t happen on your time. Utilisation wasn’t even a word. Financial performance was discussed, but it was a collective, team effort that was needed to achieve the annual financial plan and you knew what a difference your contribution made. Your opinion was heard and valued, training and professional development existed, and career planning was considered important for staff engagement and retention. Then AECOM rolled in from the US and sucked out all that was good, and replaced those things with cost-cutting coupled with high-cost glitzy real estate, an outdated and destructive spreadsheet and utilisation-driven culture, and an approach to management and leadership based on the commoditisation of people and ambivalence to their welfare. Profits are of greater value than quality and excellence, because the insatiable, faceless shareholders must be appeased and fed. They don’t care if you have more on your plate that you could ever possibly do, or you got a low NPS because you’re under-resourced, on your knees and on anti-depressants. The staff who deliver the great work, have a strong work ethic and value quality and service are taken advantage of. Meanwhile, the ever-lingering black cloud of utilisation leaves you in no doubt that you either perform or you’re out. “Performing” requires consistently excessive hours – nights, weekends, public holidays and annual leave are all consumed with an impossibly high workload. If you don’t keep running at it, it will engulf you like a tsunami and your performance and remuneration outcomes duly affected. Year-on-year you must do more with fewer resources and on a crappy below CPI annual increase in pay. Incentive programs encourage poor behaviours, and rarely pay out anyway. The goal posts are regularly shifted, and there’s always somewhere in the business that is not doing so well which is leveraged as an excuse not to pay out to those who have nothing to do with that and have put their shoulder to the wheel to deliver to their clients and play their part in the AECOM machine. But there’s always money for executive’s packages and funding for extravagant “leadership conferences”. So many people have slaved thanklessly for this organisation – strong work ethics, principles and commitment to quality and client service is simply (but covertly) harnessed and abused. Loyalty and striving for excellence, combined with a total disregard for employee wellbeing, comes with severe personal consequences – but not for the managers who simply don’t care and will replace you if you can’t cut it. Divorces are on the table, relationships pushed to the brink and beyond due to stressed-out and absent partners, high rates of alcohol and other substance abuse turned to as a coping mechanism, depression and anxiety over job security, financial strain, children struggling with stressed and largely absent parents due to incessant workloads. Suicidal thoughts, when expressed, are met with blank stares and zero response from the managers who don’t care and are ill equipped to do anything. It’s easier and more cost-efficient for them to replace you, than address the root causes. The history books are filled with the rise and fall of empires. Give this sinking ship a very wide berth.

    Great people, great offices in good location

    Cons

    Lack of strategic direction and poor performance in some parts of the business are a constant. This business is recognised by their clients as uncompetitive in the marketplace and this means losing more bids than they win places utilisation pressure on those staff that are performing. These are the everyday norms with this business.
