I worked at Anglo American full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Competitive salary plus allowances, bonus, financial assistance with accomodation. Great opportunities for hands on operations and maintenance experience as a graduate.

    Cons

Culture of long hours/unpaid overtime at most but not all Anglo sites, lack of rosters that allow good work/life balance for office staff living in mining towns (monday to friday staff on salary only) lack of appropriate work or mentors for mechanical engineering graduates

    Advice to Management

Dont take mechanical engineering grads, or take much less and be smarter about who you allocate them too. Head hunt mech engineers from mining consultancies who have a broader skillset and will be more useful instead. 1 of them is worth 3-5 grads and will transition quickly to valuable leadership roles. Grad program for mech engineers at anglo is not sufficient, grads are mostly allocated to departments who don't... have suitable work or mentors for them, setting them up for a tough time surpassing the grad program without pursuing non-engineering disciplines. Neither of the sites I was allocated to as an engineering graduate had any mechanical engineers.

I have been working at Anglo American full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good wage, opportunities to move departments and to move up. A lot is expected of you and generally high work hrs in its underground mines. Open cut is more relaxed

    Cons

Graduates are usually thrown into straight engineering or coordinator roles. Not much time to actually do the graduate program. This puts on a lot more stress however you learn a lot quicker

    Pros

Big company, potential for movement, well paying roles plus bonuses (depending on commodity prices)

    Cons

A lot of old timers that have been in roles for years, makes it hard for people to progress up the ranks.
