I worked at Appen full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Hours are flexible, work is fairly easy.

    Cons

Management has a short term financial gain mindset, doing whatever it takes to make money now, even if it loses the company money in the long run. No foresight or understanding of the industry at all.

I have been working at Appen

    Pros

Can't think of any. Never got the chance.

    Cons

I took all the required testing and was contacted by an Appen recruiter. I was asked to send my details and Super Fund information after passing the tests with flying colors. Three months after sending my details to start work I received an email stating that others matched my skill set more closely? I had long forgotten about Appen at this point and had moved on. What a strange company.

I have been working at Appen full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Unmatched for diversity in the workplace. I've met so many great people, and I have made amazing, lasting friendships.

    Cons

It's not perfect. Staff treat long hours as normal. You are expected to take calls early in the morning and late at night. There can be a lot of pressure to meet deadlines.

    I worked at Appen full-time

    Pros

Interesting work, opportunity to meet and work with a diverse group of people.

    Cons

Due to the nature of the work at the Appen, which thrives on the skills and expertise of native speakers of languages from all over the world, the company has quite a diverse workforce. But that doesn't necessarily mean everyone is treated equally. And behaviours are not always clearly observable or noticeable - I had been subject to subtle bullying by management during my employment. There is favourtism amongst managers. The pay isn't fair for the amount of effort and time needed to get work done within the unrealistic deadlines that are always set in order to stay in the competition. Also, there's barely room for progression or growth, unless you're a favourite.

I worked at Appen full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Multicultural environment - the only good thing about this company.

    Cons

    - Management is racist, although they don't think they. Skin colors determine your salary level. - When you request a performance review, you will be warned not to request a pay increase. This is what they will tell you: the higher your salary gets, the more likely they will get rid of you

I have been working at Appen full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    a) Appen's website looks "professional". Appen's email communications appear "template-based". b) Lots and lots of assessments - but you will never get paid (that is a guarantee)

    Cons

    a) Lots and lots of assessments - but you will never get paid (that is a guarantee) b) They will never pay you. They will never train you. They are offering "ghost opportunities" when their company is a shell-company that has no funding. Fake job advertisements. No training opportunities. Hear the alarm bells going.

I have been working at Appen full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Really interesting work where I have exposure to a vast number of cultures and languages and the chance to apply my linguistic and management expertise. - My colleagues are all like-minded people and there is a genuine sense of team spirit when working together on projects. The office is free of any negative competitive undercurrents. - Appen is of course very flexible and always encourages its employees to have a good work/life balance.

    Cons

    - I am being paid a little less than I would expect given the hours and intensity. This is partially compensated for by the great working environment and a commitment by Appen to its time in lieu policy for any hours overworked.
