I have been working at Appen full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great team members, often interesting projects, exciting and expanding field of work. So much potential. I'd really like to LOVE this job.

    Cons

Low pay compared to other jobs in the same industry- HR don't take this concern seriously. You can easily do a google search and find similar jobs that pay much more. Unfortunately Appen is in the habit of expecting that people accept jobs here because they are fascinated by the work and don't care about the pay. As we corporatize further, this is less realistic and the company is letting it's employees down by not considering how they can make jobs here attractive. Systems issues are often blamed on employees- the new crowd management system is riddled with bugs and errors, and yet when invoicing goes wrong, or a project system shorts out, or the email function breaks, it's the PMs and team members who are blamed, both by internal teams and the crowd. I've received threats and abuse over things that I couldn't control. Sometimes Appen Connect just breaks. We all feel strongly that we want to do the best by our crowd, but it's hard with tools that are not yet fit for purpose. Internal corporate teams (Recruitment, HR and Finance) are often very difficult to work with. Everything turns in to blame games, walking on egg shells, person to person problems, and as soon as you ask internal corporate teams to do their jobs, you're suddenly the bad guy. It's very tiring for project teams to be stuck in the middle of this. Burnout is common, people are afraid of expressing concern, we lose team members to other companies that we've spent so much time training, people work long hours thinking that bad work/life balance is normal.

    Pros

You can work from home, Flexibility,

    Cons

Low pay, you need to pay one month to get invoice. You can submit it in the next month and get paid after another month. They don't pay on time. Once, I took part in one project. It took me five days and they don't want to pay. Because I did more work than required. 😌 Very disappointed. You don't have a report how are you paid, what work is rejected and why.

I have been working at Appen for more than 3 years

    Pros

You get to work from home.

    Cons

You do in fact work from home. However, the company has strict guidelines about how and when you can and cannot work. They pretty much confine you to their schedule so you are not technically contract labor since the company imposes so many rules and restrictions about how and when you work. They are gaming the system to avoid providing benefits and a decent wage. Many postings for jobs but the vast majority of them have no work. They are posting jobs here that have either ended already or there is no work available. Why post jobs here to hire new contractors when they don't have enough work to keep the contractors that they already have busy? Low pay and unreasonable deadlines on projects that do have work available. They void their own contracts on a daily basis so it has a "wild west" feel to it. "Do as we say, not as we do!" ABSOLUTELY NO support from the project managers. ABSOLUTELY NONE! And when I say "ABSOLUTELY NONE" that is exactly what I mean. Email them for support or file a support ticket all you want, but you will NOT EVER get a single reply. You are on your own to try to figure the whole thing out. They can't even get your hours and wages correct and meet their own deadlines related to updating payroll weekly. This once great company has become a company in name only. Please save yourself the aggravation and look for work somewhere else. This is not even a good side gig.
