I have been working at Australian Red Cross Blood Service full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Always the opportunity to further skills or develop new ones, great benefits, very flexible. Working in a donor centre and dealing with happy donors and staff is the greatest part of the job, everyone is just so giving and lovely!

    Cons

Can be repetitive, however, every donor is different! You can always further skills and take on different roles in centre too and that makes every day different!

    Advice to Management

All management I have dealt with are very personable and easy going. It's great to have the big bosses come out to the centre and get to know everyone. Makes everyone feel important.

I have been working at Australian Red Cross Blood Service part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    The donors, pay, co workers.

    Cons

    workload, work/ life balance, management.

    Advice to Management

I highly doubt this will even be heard by them but if they actually do want to improve and receive more consistent positive reviews then I will say this; I have witnessed a constant lack of care and consideration toward donor centre staff work loads and working conditions. Senior management are manipulative and often use bullying and intimidation tactics to force staff to either work within the strict and inflexible... confines of their "policies" or force them to resign. They publicly promote that they offer a work life balance for employees but only if it suits the operational requirements which it never does, they use careful wording and loopholes to get away with what is essentially unfair treatment of hard working staff. There is no job security either as they have no problems firing long term employees and replacing them, the high turnover of staff also adds to them being over worked and consistently understaffed. Employees are often asked for their opinions and feedback but are often punished in one way or another if the feedback is negative. Staff who speak up are advised to speak to HR but often end up in a worse position or aren't helped at all and are quickly silenced. Hard work and loyalty of staff means nothing to senior management if they don't like you, there are many bullies in management roles and it's usually safer to keep your head down and mouth shut if you don't want to become a target. The damage to employees mental health has never been taken seriously and is just brushed under the rug. No one ever feels safe to speak up. that really needs to change and senior managers need to be held accountable and trained better to deal with these issues in a non intimidating way.

I have been working at Australian Red Cross Blood Service full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I feel privileged to work for an organisation that is truly making a difference to the health and well being of Australians. I am trusted and empowered to make decisions within my purview without any sense of being watched or micro managed. I also feel safe to be able to speak up and make suggestions and recommendations on how to make improvements to work processes. I am also encouraged to participate in areas... outside my subject matter expertise which gives me a sense of working for a greater good. Salary is commensurate with outside opportunities but bumped a little with generous salary packaging provisions.

    Cons

Sometimes the nature of working in a highly regulated environment means that we move a little more slowly to make changes than I would like.

    Advice to Management

Like many organisations people are sometimes pigeonholed and there is a lack of understanding of their full skillset which can sometimes mean that internal options are overlooked for external talent.

I have been working at Australian Red Cross Blood Service part-time for less than a year

    Pros

I have been employed with the Blood Service now for 6 months, and during this time have felt overwhelming support and training. My centre has wonderful people, both staff and donors, which makes coming to work each day easy. It's definately a rewarding and enjoyable job.

    Cons

I haven't really encountered any downsides to the role, but I have certainly felt challenged more than I had anticipated and out of my comfort zone at times throughout the first few months.

I worked at Australian Red Cross Blood Service part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Pay, benefits are great. Co workers were like family as I was there 7 years. The company is improving slowly.

    Cons

Supervisor's lack of experience / support from upper management. Supervisor and worker relationships are poor.

    Advice to Management

Communication between management and supervisor needs addressing. The back lash from 2013 - 2014 company's management restuctoring is still present therefore there is a lot of confusion between supervisor 's as to what is their role and what is management role. Ie supervisors trying take on management duties, HR and "return -to-work plans" without the training, experience and support. This issue needs... addressing so the supervisor and workers relationship can be repaired. This reduces affective communication between supervisor and workers. Workers then have less trust in supervisors and management as a result. More clear reasonable expectations, regular constuctive feedback, positive communication and trust in your employees abilities, would help repair this relationship between workers and supervisors. This would also reduce workers compensation claims and improve staff mental health. The Fear of speaking up and losing your job needs to change, as this is why I believe physical and mental health issues are increasing for the company.

The pay and entitlements are very decent with the added bonus that you are working in an organisation that helps save lives

    Cons

There can be quite a bit of pressure to get donations quickly, and with KPIs on how quickly you can get a needle into someone and the monitoring of your success rate, it can be stressful.

    Advice to Management

Be aware more supportive and also realistic in your expectations.
