    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Australian Red Cross Lifeblood full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I feel privileged to work for an organisation that is truly making a difference to the health and well being of Australians. I am trusted and empowered to make decisions within my purview without any sense of being watched or micro managed. I also feel safe to be able to speak up and make suggestions and recommendations on how to make improvements to work processes. I am also encouraged to participate in areas outside my subject matter expertise which gives me a sense of working for a greater good. Salary is commensurate with outside opportunities but bumped a little with generous salary packaging provisions.

    Cons

Sometimes the nature of working in a highly regulated environment means that we move a little more slowly to make changes than I would like.

I worked at Australian Red Cross Lifeblood part-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Volunteer donors best thing about the job. Salary packaging very good.

    Cons

Covert and overt bullying by management makes for an unhappy place. Expectations of meeting and increasing KPIs unrealistic as pressures are put on staff to do so without making mistakes. Not enough time to do training. Says there is flexibility in job hours. That is not strictly true as you are required to conform to operational requirements.

I worked at Australian Red Cross Lifeblood part-time

    Pros

Dealing with very pleasant and well donors (usually!) who give up their free time to give life saving blood products. Knowing that the work you do is essential for saving lives. Competitive salary with generous salary packaging. Good training initially.

    Cons

The bullying culture within donor services is tremendous, and they seem to use their performance improvement programs as a bullying tool. They have no patience for older nurses, constantly pressurising you to work faster and faster, absolutely obsessive about time to coach, all of your actions are constantly monitored with printouts to show you any downfalls; this is all measured by their computer system. It shows lack of respect to the donors, in that customer service falls down as you no longer have the time to care for them properly, our donors deserve better! Every couple of years the Enterprise Agreement is renegotiated with the help of the Union, and every time the Blood service try to reduce your benefits in some way. Once your initial training is over there is not very much more on offer. Very little opportunity for promotion. The managers and session leaders spend a lot of time sitting in front of a computer and tend to stay in the job the longest. Repetitive work, can become incredibly monotonous, it is like a factory production line with little time to spend with the donor, even first time donors, it can be dangerous for both staff and donor, especially if they start fitting (the donor.) Operate with skeletal staff numbers, even in really busy periods. Against paying overtime. Difficult to get the holiday you want because of skeletal staff numbers. My position became untenable and I felt forced to leave.

I worked at Australian Red Cross Lifeblood full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Used to be full Salary package which partially ended (August 2016) Life saving products Labs run with up to date equipment

    Cons

Extremely poor management (middle to upper.) Goes straight to the top. No career progression Bullying culture Promotions limited if non existent Avoid or paying penalties or overtime worked. Only cares about making profits. Made over 20 million one year and didn't want to give 3 percent standard increase to staff until they threaten to strike. Poor training and blames staff for any mistakes as a result. Mistakes are waiting to happen and they just use scapegoats. The management never want to admit any wrong doing, even if they were there mistakes. Cover ups from upper management...

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Australian Red Cross Lifeblood full-time for less than a year

    Pros

This really has been a company that reflects its people helping values throughout the business. They have worked hard to get it to where it is today as a comparable business for the main aim of being able to provide more cost effective solutions so they can give money back to the government health budget. Salary is good and salary packaging Not For Profit Organisation tax cut benefits make it great!

    Cons

Due to business and department structure changes, long serving employees can be a little disgruntled and although understandable they are upset over employee redundancies, there is also a brighter side of the jobs that were reallocated and what a great place it is to work.
