    Neutral Outlook

I worked at BHP full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Very stable in terms of sustaining viability in a struggling market due to its size and conservative nature: large assets of key commodities. A safe place to work, in all meanings of the word.

    Cons

At the same time, overloaded by the nature of the large structure. While powerful by nature of being a multi-national, the organizations agility in a struggling commodities market is found lacking in comparison.

I have been working at BHP full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great company to work for. Very well managed. People focus has been changing for the good since the new management took over.

    Cons

Can be a bit conservative and process driven.

    Advice to Management

Try to decentralise some of the decision making.

    No Opinion of CEO

I worked at BHP full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Amazing people Good pay Good benefits Nice offices

    Cons

Very conservative Managers rule by fear Focused on minutiae (e.g. typo on contract) vs. on the bigger picture (damaging customer relationships and losing potential of business deals) Knee-jerk reaction to latest buzzword in the business world (simplicity, standardization, diversity) which leads to lack of business (for the company) and career opportunities (for employees)

    Advice to Management

Go back to the culture the company had during the tenure of Chip Goodyear as CEO

I worked at BHP full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Extremely smart people - Largely people you would have a beer with, although it has changed a lot - Very large company - Solid finances - Can't be fired unless you really screw up

    Cons

    - Focus solely on process and not on transactions that make business sense - Extremely risk averse - Arrogant towards customers, suppliers, and employees - Aims to make robots out of every employee - No talent management, HR is purely an administration department - Absolute zero flexibility on contracts (with customers AND employees)

    Advice to Management

Go back to the culture there was under Chip Goodyear: Innovation, win-win relationships (with customers AND employees), and have some degree of flexibility on contracts (with customers AND employees)
