      Good First Job

      Pros

Great first job out of college. They provide training and an easy path into a large company that looks good on a resume. Promotion from a trainee to a CP2 is fast and can be done in about a year or two. Great work life balance, as they never give overtime. I've had maybe 10 hrs overtime in the last year.

      Cons

Job is monotonous and frustrating. A lot of people get burned out very quickly working in such an emotionally draining sector like work comp, and this place is not immune. The salary is well below industry average because it's cheaper for them to hire new grads every couple of months than it is to pay their employees. As a result, there's a lot of micromanagement that makes emotionally distressing cases even harder to manage.

Solid Starter Job for a Recent Grad

      Pros

Overall great first job for your first couple of years out of college. BHHC hires a ton of recent grads, making it easy to form post-college connections that often extend to friendships outside of the office (was great for me personally, having moved from out of state to Omaha for the job). Solid personal & professional growth at the start as you learn a new industry and learn how to be a productive employee in a traditional corporate environment. Ideal work-life balance. Masters Degree fully paid for by the company no strings attached. Prestigious company name.

      Cons

After 2-3 years, the day-to-day work starts to feel stale and repetitive and the days begin to drag on. After obtaining Masters Degree from the company, you do not receive any sort of built-in raise and you can substantially increase your earnings overnight by just moving on to another company. Traditional/conservative culture becomes irritating and stiff after you prove yourself to be a valuable employee (ex. no working from home opportunities, no shortened hours on Summer Fridays, a lot of the older "lifers" look down on you if they see you arrive even 10 minutes late or leave 10 minutes early). Raises are automatically slotted in based on longevity rather than performance - great for slack-offs, not so great for top level performers. Very high turnover due to the above reasons: the majority of college grad hires move on after 2-3 years; the joke was that those who remain after that point will become the next generation of lifers. With the constant turnover it becomes discouraging to see your original group that you bonded with shrink one-by-one, and as the familiar faces continue to move on to other jobs and get replaced by newer, younger college grads, you really start to feel that the grass must be greener somewhere else for a professional who now has a few years of experience under their belt.

Glass ceiling, after a couple promotions odds of moving higher up are extremely slim. Insurance is boring and monotonous.

      It's a Claim Professional world

      Pros

Hmm...I guess decent benefits, work-life balance is apparent, good place for those just entering the workforce.

      Cons

Lack of any internal bids or growth. In a year, there has only been one opening for the department I was aiming to be in. Unwritten rule in my particular group about waiting a certain time frame before being allowed to apply for internal bids. When you submit an internal bid, they rather tell you in person, out loud, that you've been rejected. And for most internal bids, it's like they WANT to funnel everyone into being a Claims Professional first before moving on. I thought Berkshire Hathaway companies prided themselves on promoting from within and investing into all their employees in terms of growth. That was a lie. Oh, and speaking of growth, they announced an initiative to host a program for those who were interested in managerial roles. This was last year. One year later, nothing has happened. BHHC claims to be the best of the best in the WC industry. I call BS.

      Pros

Excellent Work/Life balance. Management is friendly and approachable. The pay is good for the work, and the work never becomes too stressful.

      Cons

While the opportunities to advance are appreciated, it was hard to determine what was expected for education and qualifications they were looking for in a leader. It didn't seem like extra effort or lack of effort were taken into account on any level.
