I have been working at City of Edmonton full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great salary, pension, EDOs. Many great people who work here.

    Cons

Poor decision making by upper management, does not listen to the people who are the experts in their area, no recognition. When a new director or branch manager arrives, they get rid of people then rehire new ones back. Lots of reorgs, very little results. Keeps spending on projects that end up being scrapped. Poor decision making leads to wasted spending and leads to increase taxes. Lots of talk about work life...

    Advice to Management

Be nice to your employees and listen to them. Use their expertise, isn't that why you hired them?

I have been working at City of Edmonton part-time

    Pros

Great pay and benefits. If you work as an aquatic instructor you get a free access to the rec centers. Also way more fun than any other part time job.

    Cons

Shifts aren't as long as if you worked at a fast food place which means less money in the bank

    Advice to Management

I would not say that that they need to change anything. System works fantastic.

I have been working at City of Edmonton full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great unionized pay in blue collar type jobs.

    Cons

Administration/Management is extremely disorganized. A new boss comes in and completely restructures the entire bureaucracy every two or three years thinking they're going to finally "fix" it and create a host of new problems. Communication between individuals and departments is terrible. Critical information does not reach the ground level staff who it effects. Instead we get a constantly flow of useless information...

    Advice to Management

Every city employee has an email address for official city communication. Instead of sending out critical information to overworked supervisors, send those critical memos regarding our jobs right to our inboxes, and stop sending the memos that don't affect us in any way whatsoever. Front-line staff don't need to know about who is the director of this, that, or the next department, who is on vacation and who is taking...

I worked at City of Edmonton full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Wide diverse organization with plenty to learn and do

    Cons

Long term senior clerical staff with no education and an intense fear of change. Clerical staff run the department and dictate the negative culture. They dismiss the city manager and al of management... if you haven't worked there for 10 years you are deemed to be unaware and valued

    Advice to Management

Insist that all clerical, including accounting assistants move between departments every 2 years for at least 3 months per assignment to encourage development, understanding and to prevent complacency and silo mentality
