I have been working at Co-op part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Decent pay, which rises after 6 months Respectable ethics Friendly upper management team Good if you like to know your local community

    Cons

Not the best choice in store managers Deliveries have a tendency to be late High standards can create a bit of stress

    Advice to Management

Be more personable and treat the employees in your store with more respect. Saying "everyone is replaceable" isn't a good way to keep up morale.

I have been working at Co-op part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Everybody gets paid the living wage or above regardless of age and they are reasonably accommodating when compared to other employers.

    Cons

Manager is disorganised and shifts can be busy. Often understaffed but that’s not different to other jobs in food retail.

    Advice to Management

Be more organised and get colleagues involved more

I worked at Co-op part-time for less than a year

    Pros

There wasn't a whole lot to do, so it wasn't hugely stressful. Also, frequent breaks were allowed.

    Cons

It was a hugely bad experience for me but this was 90% due to the other staff there. Generally horrible people who ignored all of the rules implemented by the actual company, were on their phones constantly, took smoking breaks every twenty minutes, and refused to let me do anything other than sit on the tills. One of the staff members was constantly very inappropriate, and when I mentioned this to the manager, she... blamed me. I left shortly after. I imagine if you work in a Co-op where everyone follows the rules and hold each other accountable, it's probably fine.

    Advice to Management

Hold your staff more accountable, and check in much more regularly in the weird little rural shops. That's where all the bad service is.

I worked at Co-op full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There is good morale at a Cooperative supermarket. There is always chance to be independent and challenge yourself.

    Cons

The "head office" management often lack the ability to consider the real difficulties that have been presented to a store, and more often than not are asking for results which are impossible to achieve with the resources that they provide. The training applications on the tablets feel very dated. The style of training suggests they are more interested in 'ticking the box' than making sure employees have a... thorough understanding of the information they've been given. This unfortunately leads to mistakes and 'job-shortcuts'.

    Advice to Management

No matter how high you are in the pyramid of management, actually put yourself if your subordinates shoes and make sure they have the resources to complete the task to a high standard. No one wants to do a bad job, but when you physically can't achieve what you need to with the resources provided you become jaded and this inevitably affects the quality of the store and the experience the customers receive.

    Pros

Well paid for someone my age

    Cons

Given more hours than I wanted, 12 hour contract but working more like 15-20 Awful management, the management were very clicky quite rude to the new staff and not very understanding. Staff discount not overly generous, 10% discount most of the time and 20% on payday
