      Lots of politics, good vision

      Pros

Good institutional commitment to promoting customer wellbeing (with senior buy-in), including significant investments. Tech stack modernising relatively quickly with good investment. Very good flexible working arrangements, before and during COVID. Quite mature data science capabilities, training and project opportunities (if you're in the right team).

      Cons

The reputation and institutional support for your team will decide the success of your projects more than any of your (or your manager's) contributions. Before you join, try to figure out if the team you're joining has this support. Huge organisation means lots of duplicated work and political jostling for credit. Strong data and model governance has the side effect of hugely delaying major projects. Pay is below market rate for data analysts / scientists. Unless you're in a growing team, no clear paths to promotion. Strongly feel like HR /management want to turn you into a highly specialised cog in the machine - I saw several good people leave because they were forced into year-long projects with arcane legacy software that developed useless skills.

Positive/development culture is an excuse for below market pay

Dec 29, 2020 - Data Scientist in Sydney

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Focused on developing individual attributes - Flexible working - Management very focused on developing team, scouting work and promoting wins

      Cons

      - Pay has consistently decreased in the past year due to the precedent of other data scientists receiving a lower salary and management trying to save costs - CBA is focused on using the culture as an intangible benefit to justify lower pay than the market - There is absolutely no negotiation in pay
