I have been working at Corrective Services NSW full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Learning opportunities, training, pay and conditions

    Cons

Bullying is rife within the department with my experience in the non-custodial settings I’ve worked in. There is no commitment towards employee wellbeing - they will talk about how important it is, but not follow through as managers often bully staff into working long hours (and forfeiting additional hours worked). I’ve been told to cancel doctor’s appointments and told not to attend funerals because work was more urgent and important. Bullies are protected and their behaviour goes on unacknowledged and supported by management, while the bullied experience gaslighting and are punished for reporting bad behaviour. There is a lot of nepotism and cronyism within this department - more so than I’ve experienced in other state and federal government departments I’ve worked in. What you know really doesn’t count - it is who you know.

    Pros

Great colleagues and forming long-term relationships. Excellent wages for what you do. Different departments to move into (not just work in the gaol)

    Cons

A very challenging job at times. You need resilience and common sense, otherwise, you probably won't like the job. The job is as hard as you make it!

I have been working at Corrective Services NSW full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great colleagues, work is interesting, lots of flexibility with hours due to flexi time. Lovely friendly people, Make lots of life long friends.

    Cons

Not much in the way of perks. Have to buy your own coffee, tea, pay for all your own Christmas parties, etc. Not a great deal of recognition. Not a huge amount of room to move up the ladder, although that depends on what part of the Service you work in.
