I have been working at Costain full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good benefits. Good balance life/work

    Cons

They normally create JV with other companies to provide rail engineers. Which means that if you are a rail engineer within Costain, very likely you will be reporting to someone of another company. Therefore, your Costain line manager will be someone who doesn't know your work and this will affect your annual review.

    Advice to Management

To better assess line managers allocations

I have been working at Costain full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Clear company values and culture across the business. The senior management update staff regularly regarding future projects and opportunities. There are also plenty of opportunities throughout the business for staff to transfer freely between all sectors Costain operate in.

    Cons

Over the last few years they have fallen behind in both salaries and in winning contracts for the best infrastructure projects in the UK. Due to this they struggle to attract the best permanent surveyors in the industry and opt for freelance surveyors. The larger contractors such as Kier have established themselves abroad which means that they are unfortunately not as attractive - particularly for experienced staff. In terms of training, the business needs to improve on identifying the professional requirements of each member of staff.

    Advice to Management

Focus on developing, training and paying permanent staff in line with current mark rates. Look to expand the business abroad (again).

I have been working at Costain part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Invest a lot in training
-Client-focused and aspiring to become a management consultancy
-Fun projects to work in , leading to work availability

    Cons

-Managers seldom listen to bright, agile and innovative ideas despite providing fantastic lip service

-Management don't follow the management systems they articulate on paper to comply with bodies these departments are certified to

    - Unprofessional people who have worked within the firm so long they've either become set in their ways due to being unchallenged, or they've bullied any 'threat' to their way of working

    - 'Old boys club' / jobs for boys mentality at mid-senior management which means the right people are in the company but in the lower positions. Whilst highly incompetent 'managers' occupy leadership positions by virtue of nepotism.

    Advice to Management

Allow younger staff to have a say in decision-making, take on their modern insights into innovating. Provide a framework for growth by formalising /standardising the lessons learnt process transferring these across projects.

Provide a training matrix for managers to get leadership, auditing and Quality training to stop the focus ONLY being on delivery and commercial interests.
