I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-Great Work/Life Balance -Spectacular 401(k) match and non elective contributions ($0.75 of every dollar match up to 8% of base salary also a non-elective company contribution as well: under 40 is an additional 3%, under 50 is 5% and over is 7%. Therefore if an employee makes the 8% 401(k) contribution the company will match 9%, 11% or 13% depending on age.) -Mercedes-Benz lease program (if played correctly: zero down,...

I worked at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Fortune 500 benefits A few very smart pure engineering types (no desire to be a manager)

    Cons

Individuals would waste a week perfecting the last 5% of their 15 min Powerpoint presentations for management (encouraged by direct managers).

    Advice to Management

Stop valuing cutthroat slave driver managers like John Box more than creating a safe work atmosphere.

I worked at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Workload as a design engineer was very manageable. The company car leasing program is a huge perk.

    Cons

The subject matter is not very interesting (truck chassis). Gaffney SC is not a very interesting area to relocate to.

    Advice to Management

DTNA should make it easier for employees interested in other DTNA sites to transfer.

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good 401k plan. Average salary, vacation, and health benefits. Able to survive industry downturns through bail outs by parent company.

    Cons

A mundane work environment and lack of appreciation by management sums this company up. Daimler has consistently been trying to break into the Top 100 Companies To Work For list with no success. They have failed every year and point the blame to the employees who survey them. They have seen record setting profits in recent years and share very little of it to non-management ranks. The message is always "more more more."...

    Advice to Management

Share the wealth in good times. Be committed to making real changes if your serious about achieving Top 100 company status. It starts with a culture change that will take you out of your comfort zone.

I worked at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great employee base and just the right size. Being headquartered in Portland, Oregon is a huge plus.

    Cons

The corporate leaders, known as the OPCOM are completely detached from the needs and potentials of that environment. As a result, the tools are inadequate, the expectations are ridiculous, and the reward system fiendishly lopsided.

    Advice to Management

Be honest and consistent with your employees about the corporate mission so that your true talent pool can get on board. A small plaque labeled "Our True North" does not constitute a mission statement. Also, the five year rotations of senior officials from Germany is unproductive. That amounts to about four years of training and one year of compressed management.

I worked at Daimler Trucks North America

    Pros

There's a lot going on within Daimler so the POTENTIAL to be exposed to several interesting developments does exist. It's a big place and well-rooted in Portland. Your colleagues and co-workers are likely to be great people with much to offer. You'll have to work your standard 60 hours per week plus an extra 20 chasing that carrot to make it happen, unless you're German.

    Cons

Getting what you were promised is like pulling teeth. The management structure is far too tall and the leaders are great at producing profits and good at nothing else. Don't expect them to believe that though. They'll blow smoke about the importance of diversity and cooperation and suggestions and empowerment and forward thinking and demonstrate not a drop. It's PR focused inward which makes one wonder just what kind...

    Advice to Management

You've raised the bar and your employees have responded. Now DEMONSTRATE appreciation by trusting and supporting them. Granting the opportunities employees deserve to consultants instead is very damaging to employee morale. Stop producing guidelines without teeth. Until, you SHOW that you're serious about changes it's all just distracting noise. Your employees read The Toyota Way and the 7 Habits and it only cemented...
