I worked at Deakin University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

nothing special. Same facilities as other universities

    Cons

There is a lot of hype about this university about a good place to work in and innovative. When you scratch the surface, you find the same bullying and discriminatory practices elsewhere. The University management is only interested in increasing enrolments (at any cost) and protecting their million dollar salaries. If you are in the good books of management you get a free pass and promotions. If not you are better off leaving the University.

    Advice to Management

Stop being hypocritical. You are not Harvard. So stop pretending you are. You are not even in the top 5 universities in Australia and won't be for many years.

I have been working at Deakin University full-time

    Pros

An outward looking university that seeks to innovate
    Flexible working conditions
    Professional development opportunities
Depending on the area of work, there may be career paths or secondment opportunities.

    Cons

Location - unless you live in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, Geelong or Warrnambool. Many staff at Burwood have to work from Greenwood Park, which is a very uninspiring business park up the road, and can feel isolating. The coffee at the on-site cafe is awful.
Questionable direct appointments, particularly into management positions
As with many universities, staff who use what would technically be called bullying tactics remain unchecked. But this is a sector-wide 'tradition'.

    Advice to Management

Put more of a focus on building leadership, for both current managers and staff with supervisory duties.
Improve onboarding processes. This includes HR processes and timeliness thereof, as well as staff being available to train newcomers.
