I worked at Deakin University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

None really. I worked in eSolutions and the management was so useless they didn't realise I didn't do anything for a year.

    Cons

Deakin is a horrid place to work, very toxic, especially eSolutuons (IT department). If you're not part of an ingroup, you'll be frozen out and undermined and back stabbed. There is no real leadership in eSolutions, and it has very little respect from other areas of the university.

    Advice to Management

Sack all the IT management and start again

I worked at Deakin University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice colleagues. But climate of fear due to 18 sackings in the past year in my department

    Cons

Heavy technical demands of online teaching. Minority of students are abusive and eValuate scores are king. Many benefits (eg internal research funds) hard to avail and very bureaucratic

    Advice to Management

Be realistic about expectations given high turnover rates and lack of familiarity of virtually everyone with processes

I worked at Deakin University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

nothing special. Same facilities as other universities

    Cons

There is a lot of hype about this university about a good place to work in and innovative. When you scratch the surface, you find the same bullying and discriminatory practices elsewhere. The University management is only interested in increasing enrolments (at any cost) and protecting their million dollar salaries. If you are in the good books of management you get a free pass and promotions. If not you are better off leaving the University.

    Advice to Management

Stop being hypocritical. You are not Harvard. So stop pretending you are. You are not even in the top 5 universities in Australia and won't be for many years.
