    Pros

Okay pay and benefits Competitive Product Excellent Software Engineers

    Cons

Terrible engineering managers. Too much controlling, dictators and they rule by fear, hierarchy and fire if you try to not do slavery. So much manipulation so that teams do not get along and they can do whatever that want. Engineers are given orders and they work like slaves, and no value to any freedom just follow your bosses orders. Managers do not know how to treat people junior to them, they crush you with their own work and later take credit for all the work done by us. They watch your every move- office time in and out, lunchtime, cigarette breaks, people you mingle with at work and try to advise (dictate) you on how to do all these. Otherwise, they will take away your bonus or your job. In 1 on 1s, they will tell you what they want you to do and some people will do it either out of fear or to get the bonus, as they keep reminding us about it. They have scum masters, but of no use, they only do ceremonies, not any help or do not protect you from anything. You need to talk to your managers about everything and managers will threaten you and ask you to do whatever they want. Wrong people, with no talent, will get all praises only because of they praise the managers all the time. Managers do not tell you what is coming next, they just call you in one room and tell you what to do. There is no flexibility, no fun, only too much work.

I have been working at Dealertrack full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Culture in the Sandy Utah office is nice. People seem to care about work life balance. Management doesn't seem to micromanage. One day of work from home a week. Team building type activities. Agile process followed fairly well. Unit tests are written, people pair program some times, and it is not considered a waste of time by management.

    Cons

Interns and contractors could be treated with more respect. Cant work 100% remotely. The WCF building (which we rent the 2nd floor of) has a stupid amount security. They don't provide equipment to work from home - if you want to you have to provide your own.

I have been working at Dealertrack full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Management listens to team and the company is constantly evolving. Just the right team sizes. Nice campus. Most important thing is all teams are easy to work with.

    Cons

Working with people out of state can be difficult. Seems hard to line up priorities across different business units. Could buy nicer computers. Need more local help desk people.

I have been working at Dealertrack full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

They talk the talk . Pleasant people. Nicer facilities. Trusts engineers enough to allow them work from home 1 day a week.

    Cons

They don't walk the walk. Very much a sweat shop run by a bunch of micromanaging Dilbert bosses. The tech stack changes all the time . The Agile process is way broken.

    Dealertrack Response

Thanks for your review. I'm glad you enjoy your coworkers and the facility. I believe we are making the right steps necessary to create an excellent product. I appreciate your Dilbert comment. Everywhere I have worked is a bit like a Dilbert cartoon. Scott Adams really understands the plight of the American worker. Thanks, Paul Whitworth SVP for DMS and Fixed Ops at Cox Automotive

I worked at Dealertrack full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Sometimes there are donuts. A few of the people are okay. Other than that, they also had oxygen and coffee.

    Cons

The Portland office is a satellite office and is ignored by the NY office for the most part. Upper management has no idea what to do with half of the Portland teams, so the teams are constantly jumping from project to project as Management tries to figure out what it's doing. Management in general is made up of classic Pointy-Haired Bosses, and management also shows a strong desire to actively provide embodiments of the Peter Principle; their management surpasses useless and strides boldly into the realm of actively harmful. If your life includes their "coaching," expect your self-esteem to plummet. Dealertrack also cares more about the *appearance* of work than they care about seeing your actual work; they would rather see you filling a chair in the office for eight hours than believe you've done any work where they can't see you. People are leaving the sinking ship left and right, so if you're seeing lots of juicy-looking jobs at PDX Dealertrack, be aware that a) the job probably won't be as interesting as the projects in the job description, because management keeps changing directions (in the last 15 months I was there we had to "pivot" more than six times), so whatever position you're interviewing for will drastically change by the time you get on board, and b) you'll be joining a team which has serious morale issues.

    Pros

Almost ideal for a talented and driven person to find fulfillment in his job. Freedom to do the right thing in an atmosphere of humility and encouragement combined with strong, technical leadership characterized the Dallas office. The codebase was relatively functional, and constantly improving. Compensation was generous with market rate compensation, without the need to even negotiate. PTO and benefits were also decent. Flexible work schedules.

    Cons

Ancient technology, in terms of the web. Minor inconveniences and frustrations due to constant changes in methodology.

    Pros

Easy Interview and Screening Process. Hired only by looking at the resume. Took two oral interview. Did not go through an in depth technical questions. Value Experience.

    Cons

High turn over rate in Canada branch. Fired 5 people in a row by a month including Sr. Manager. Not interested to train and fit someone into a position. Rather willing to hire and fire rules. Day to day review after on boarding is done by one guy where as recruitment done by another guy. Engineering manager comes from a QA background and depends on the Team Leads decision. Whereas Team Leads don't participate into the interview process. So many BA guys, while less number of Developers.

I have been working at Dealertrack full-time for less than a year

    Pros

I've been working as a software engineer in DFW for over 20 years. It has taken me this much time to find a company run by engineers that values it's people. If you are an engineer considering a career in software in Dallas, don't spend several decades slogging it out with sub par companies. Work for the best. What makes DT the best software company in Dallas? Well, it starts with hiring the best. My team is first class. Every person in every position is one of the best I've ever worked with. Second, we are a true Agile team. We work in a team cave where collaboration and delivery are valued over individual contributions. We are challenged by the company to solve problems. But we are given the flexibility and support to solve them in our own way. The environment is young, hip and progressive. Engineers founded the company, so they get it. There is no day that I don't wake up excited to come to work. And that's a first. The other thing I love about this company is the products. I've worked for so many companies in this town where I couldn't care less about the business. Finance? Retail? Insurance? Market Research? Boring. We are the leading provider of technical solutions in the automotive industry. Cars. Who doesn't love cars? I'm a car guy. I race sport cars, I teach high performance driving at the local tracks and my day job involves building software that helps car dealerships run their business. it is fun, 24/7. As the Google of the automotive industry, DealerTrack takes great pride in recruiting the best. They do this by paying well, providing great benefits and giving engineers cool toys to play with. On top of that, they host things like our quarterly Hackathon where engineers are encouraged to drive innovation (and have fun at the same time). I honestly hope this is the last tech company I ever work for. I love it that much. Reach out to our recruiters and get a tour of the office. You won't be disappointed.

    Cons

Our company is always trying to improve. And we still have some areas where we need growth. First of all, the company has grown tremendously over the last several years through acquisitions and expansion. Our greatest challenges are integrating all these systems. We also have some challenges around communication between the various offices. But the upside of this is that as we find ways to solve these problems effectively, we will be able to build products that provide a level of integration that our Customers have only dreamed of. That's why we need more great engineers.
