I worked at Dealertrack full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Owned by Cox Automotive which, in turn, is owned by Cox Enterprises, who's leadership does go to lengths to treat employees humanely. Decent place to be employed to get some work done and get a paycheck.

    Cons

Mid-level management is pretty inept and clueless. Decisions made are too often based on poor or no information and on the personal whims of big-ego quasi-execs, and then those decisions change often for no better reason than the initial bad decisions were based on. Otherwise it's a decent place to work.

I worked at Dealertrack for more than a year

    Pros

Offices are great, comfortable, well equipped. Equipments are adequate. Some really good people, but depends on how lucky you are.

    Cons

Work is kind of dull sometimes, mostly because management doesn't know how to define priorities. But the worst is that there is no job security, every quarter there will be cuts, and doesn't matter if you're important or not for the company, they only see numbers, is dehumanizing. There are some great people there, but most of the time you will be working with incompetent and demotivated people who don't care about their work, because there are not real reason to improve in such environment.

I have been working at Dealertrack full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

knowing that your work has a direct impact on such a vast industry is the biggest advantage. Relatively flexible working conditions, work life balance, diverse and friendly environment. Decent benefit package and yearly bonus. Company has taken an initiative to upgrade technology stack including making use of AWS, modern Javascript frameworks etc. Higher management seems eager to listen to employees and we have seen some constructive changes.

    Cons

Pay is relatively low. Sometimes it feels like the engineering team's work and effort is not being noticed as compared to sales or other departments. These both can lower the morals.

I worked at Dealertrack full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Based on my personal experience as a Software Engineer in Falcons team: 1) The software engineering management have been successful in creating a constant learning environment; getting certified in latest technologies like AWS is encouraged. 2) Opportunity to work on complex source code in a multi-team environment. 3) Teams follow Scaled Agile framework and management encourages getting certified in the same. 4) Great people and amazing coordination between Dev and QA teams, specially the Falcons team. 5) Frequent Pizzas / Food in the kitchen. 6) Support from the management to identify and implement code optimizations. 7) Software engineering Community of Practice session where one can share their knowledge with other like-minded people. 8) Good medical benefits. 9) Tech lead has good foresight to plan for dependencies in advance.

    Cons

    1) Requirements may change mid sprint and are sometime unclear. 2) Need to be extra cautious while making changes to code and plan well in advance as other teams may have changes in the same repository. 3) May need to step up and take additional responsibility to get the work done.

I have been working at Dealertrack full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Giving its virtual monopoly status in the industry (at this moment, with biggest market share), Dealertrack can offer you steady average pay regardless of your position in the company. You can pay your bills and have food on your table with no problems. This is a heavy-process company, which means as long as you follow the process, all will be good (like in school). It's good in a way that you don't have to worry much about anything else but the processes. A side effect of processes is documentation. If you enjoy writing fiction, you will enjoy your job. There are nothing really hard or ground-breaking in this company so you will have a small or even tiny learning curve. There will be a lot of good helpful people to get you up and running. It depends on what you are looking for. If you enjoy the above (there are more, I can't list everything here), you will fit right in and enjoy the company.

    Cons

Before you read further, let me summarize it to one sentence: this company is not a software company. This is a business company and as long as the software serves the business, management is happy. If you are looking for best practices, latest technologies, ground-breaking innovation, go somewhere else. It's better for both you and the company. Giving the monopoly mentioned in the Pros, it's understandable that they have no reasons to innovate in anyways. Small changes are considered big accomplishments. Resource-hogging projects to gain insignificant improvements are given priority because managers sell them to directors and directors resell to executives. Nobody care as long as annual revenue target is met. If innovation is your thing, go elsewhere. It's 2019, almost 2020 and this company is still working as if it's 1990 (no exaggeration!). It takes 2 weeks and 10+ people in various departments to plan and deploy from midnight to dawn (if there are no rollback). There is an internal system to keep people from bumping to each other in production. If they don't have the monopoly in the business, they will be out of business a long time ago. They remind me of RIM in the 2000s. And you know what happened to RIM. The ones who know must ask approval from the ones who don't know. And they will approve in 2 seconds. Now stop and think about that. They are replacing expertise with shout-outs in case someone spots anything strange. This is the ultimate level. Hiring technical professionals so that non-technical professionals can approve. I'm in awe. Smart and talented people at all levels are leaving the company all the time. Most of their departure are silent (you can only notice) because they don't want to disturb the herd. If someone leave, especially engineers, no one is shocked because they all know it's the norm. The question is "who's next this month?" or "why no one is leaving yet?" If you think you have seen enough processes in your life, trust me, you have not seen enough until you work in this company. I'm not against processes, but this is next level. You will spend most of your time in meetings and not doing things that you are hired for. You will write documentations for ghosts to read. Again, company's revenue from being monopoly is feeding processes. They cut corners until a square turns round. Environments are combined and used for the wrong purposes. Things are not monitored properly. Most of the time, it's the users that inform them their stuff stopped working. They really pushing "the benefits of the doubt" to the next level. I'm amazed that everything is still holding together (until now). There are more but it will take many days to write up everything. Join if you want to find out.

Teams are amazing to work with. Like family.

    Cons

Sometimes we have to change the direction and can mess up the sprints. But need to do that as we react to the market. Never a dull moment.
