I worked at Edelman full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Great support system. Incredible talent. Strong leadership - but can depend on your location. Very good culture in most offices - especially places like San Francisco, Seattle and Chicago. No better place to cut your teeth. Great, great clients. Very strong creative and digital chops. Entrepreneurial.

      Cons

Conflicts of interest can be counter productive. Very NY centered - making professional growth outside of NY challenging. Executive leadership can be a hit or miss with some overly ambitious.

      Advice to Management

Work hard to be less NY centered as your best people are actually not there.

      Pros

Collaborative environment with an exceptionally supportive senior management team Investment in new technologies and platforms to ensure they kept pace with industry change Great team spirit Paid above market salary with benefits

      Cons

There is a potential to get lost within a big firm so hard to stand out

      Advice to Management

I worked at Edelman full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Edelman is a great company and the independence of the larger agency makes for an always innovating, best practices culture. The opportunities globally with the company are fantastic and the thought leadership is best in class. A great place to learn.

      Cons

The Vancouver office has some legacy leadership issues based on politics, not merit. There are a few old cronies who were a part of the Edelman acquisition of the local office who need to be let go because they are not on top of where communications is today, nor are they good with change.

      Advice to Management

Management needs to practice what they preach and eliminate double standards which seems to be improving with the very recent departure of some older, legacy senior leadership.

I worked at Edelman full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Client roster is excellent. Senior level clients are incredibly smart, focused and driven. Being independently owned allows the company to act for the long term and experiment, rather than focus so heavily on quarterly numbers. Mid-level staff (VP) and below are energetic, smart and genuinely seem to want to do the best they can.

      Cons

“Optics” far outweigh "results". Speaking for the West Coast, one of the most political environments I have ever seen. Riddled with managers who seem to have never managed before. Senior management – especially in general marketing disciplines (not traditional PR) – seem to think their job is to spend on lunches, drinks, hotels and to parade around losses disguised as wins (read: low budget, mid level, one time project...

      Advice to Management

Look past the first layer who reports to you. Dig into who really grew the client, won the pitch, built the relationship, came up with the concept. Move promotion and raise decisions to committees outside of direct managers to combat favoritism. Look at track record of success and failures and promote/replace appropriately. Pay attention to North American feedback in glassdoor – pretty consistent in terms of work...
