Pros

DotActiv can provide career growth (if you excel) and exposure to different departments of the business depending on your level of seniority. The bond you build with your colleagues from shared experience, as well as exposure to large retailers/ suppliers, is positive.

Cons

The business offering at its core is not a bad one, however, it's the company's board-level leadership that is steering DotActiv in an irredeemable direction. They originally built a business model off of hiring graduates that have little to no experience. This allows the company to offer non-competitive salaries and pass policies that would not be overlooked by seasoned talent. I would highly recommend anyone who considers joining this company to read their contracts very carefully. DotActiv implements a 'cost of training' that needs to be paid back if you resign within 2/3 years. They also lock you into a highly restrictive restraint of trade agreement and provide a long list of companies you will not be allowed to work for after leaving their employment. Overall, there seems to be no one who is able to keep what is ethical and in the best interests of the staff, top of mind for the board. Those who have tried have often ended up suspended, dismissed, at the CCMA or even in court. There is a large drive from top management for the growth of the company, however, with the poor level of strategic direction, proposed initiatives are simply not feasible. For example, staff were promised 5-year career roadmaps which were never delivered. This environment is also highly focused on a culture of control and disciplinary action is unfortunately a common occurrence. I believe that these factors have contributed to the high level of staff turnover that is experienced. Many members of the senior management team have resigned over the past year or so, leaving the average tenure in the company very low. This also leads to a lack of experience within the company and clients suffer the consequences.

Pros

there are no positives at all

Cons

My experience applying to DotActiv as a graduate was disappointing and financially concerning. While the role is presented as a development opportunity for students, it felt more like a liability than genuine support. A key concern was being informed that employees may be liable for approximately R30,000 in training fees if they leave the company within three years. For a graduate or entry-level candidate, this is a significant financial risk, especially when combined with a low salary, limited benefits, and many work-related costs falling on the individual. Overall, the expectations and financial obligations placed on employees did not feel aligned with what is typically considered a graduate-friendly or supportive environment. I would strongly advise students and graduates to carefully review the contract terms, compensation, and financial implications before accepting a role.
