Pros

Reasonable location, close to town and other amenities Free fruit, tea and coffee and toast with peanut butter Office is reasonably nice

Cons

This account looks like someone at Elektron trying to make a fresh start, if you search for "Elektron Technology" on Glassdoor you'll see there are many reviews from disgruntled employees in the Cambridge office and have been for some time. It's quite clear that upper management are mostly interested in selling off various parts of the business and reaping the rewards. They literally don't care about anything else and this fact bleeds through in every aspect of management style. I know this sounds hysterical and when you read these Glassdoor reviews you feel there must be more to the story but I advise you to look at the sheer number of bad reviews considering how small the company is, it's unlikely that all of them just had an axe to grind. There's a few good people but none of them are incentivised to do a good job and they either retreat to their own domain or resign themselves to sticking it out. Another thing to bear in mind is your experience will vary heavily depending on which product you're working on. Some are largely ignored, others are put under extreme pressure. Only Checkit is considered important (as management is hoping to sell it off and retirewithin the next few years) HR, reception and general office management have all been made redundant in the last 6 months with the expected results. Accounts and Bulgin are left to their own devices. IT is widely considered a joke, even technical roles are often given extremely decrepit IT hardware, we're talking years and years old with broken components etc. I would strongly recommend you don't join this company or if you do you do it with your eyes open. Staff turnover is immense for a reason, benefits are pretty scarce and pay is only average (with almost zero scope to get a raise, though rest assured that you will be lied to and told one is coming). I have worked in many companies large, small, well run and poorly run and I have honestly never been witness to a place so transparently sad and dysfunctional. I've ranked career opportunities and work/life balance highly because people leave so often that its easy to take over their role, though I should point out it's impossible to get a pay rise or actually move to another position. Work life balance is ranked highly because everyone is so incompetent you can get away with not doing any work.

Pros

Some good people. Staff turnover is so high, you can get seniority just by sticking around for a year or two. Free coffee and fruit.

Cons

Management think employees are simply interchangeable cogs which can be used and thrown away. They simply don't value skills. Best example? A dozen of us were just TUPE'd across when part of the business was sold. Did we get a leaving do? Did we even get a leaving card saying thank you for work over the last 6 years? Did they even gather everyone round in the office to say goodbye to us? Nope. All the other parts of the business have also been packaged up, ready for sale. Initially Elektron sold businesses which weren't part of its "core business". Now it doesn't actually look like there's a core business at all, except for selling it all and getting cash back to the board. This can only be a good thing for all the various bits, because at least then they might be run competently. There are good people here. The trouble is that mostly they don't stay long, because as soon as they get senior enough to realise how the place works, they tend to leave. No parking on site either - 20 minute walk from the Park and Ride carpark.
