Pros
Small company (engineering’s getting smaller every day with the amount of people leaving) so lots of opportunity to stand out for contributions. Promotions given more frequently than in other companies, usually when others in the team leave, to try and increase staff retention. Salaries updated pretty well, usually when people inform management that they’re not paying market value and other companies are willing to pay more. You get to work on a product that appears to help the people working on the NHS frontline to provide a better service and understand where their gaps in that service’s efficiency are.
Cons
Engineers used to be close to the CEO, he used to maintain good communications with the engineering team, lots of direct teams calls etc, that’s all gone now over the last year. Leadership team haven’t been open with the finances of the company for the last year, which was a shock when they felt they had to reveal them to explain no bonuses this year. Business model is horribly troubled due to the very long cycles, and small rewards, from their primary sales source, the NHS. Some deals take over 2 years to close. Product haven’t really provided a clear, well-planned vision for the company, resulting in confusing changes of direction for the long term plans. There’s also been a LOT of conflict over the last year between Product and Engineering, causing a lot of engineers to walk. Morale is occasionally through the floor due to both senior eng management changes in the beginning of this year and the amount of engineers leaving, even the eng managers all left. A few under-planned and not-thought-through projects of varying sizes have dented faith considerably in the C-team.
